Letter to the NY Civil Liberties Union

Dear Donna Lieberman & Galen Sherwin,

I am writing to you as a New Yorker, a woman, and a mother. I am extremely alarmed that with the closing of St.Vincent's Hospital, homebirth is effectively being rendered illegal here in NYC. I had my son at home under the care of a midwife with 30 years of experience. I chose this course not because I am a ( Read more... )

I'm so glad you're writing to them about this. I was shocked when I heard about it.

The RRP is likely to be your best bet on this, so I'm very glad you're contacting them. But I used to work under the Capital Region Chapter's director, Melanie Trimble, and it occurs to me that this issue is something she'd likely be very interested in. As someone whose office is physically on State Street, maybe she could be someone you might talk to as well? It certainly couldn't hurt. 518-436-8594, or mtrimble@nyclu.org. Good luck!

I will forward her a copy of my email and I'll also forward her info to some of the other homebirth women I know here in NYC. Including one who is supposed to be having her birth quite soon...

Thanks.

N.

I should mention: I would contact her myself, but I feel it would mean more coming from a mother living in New York state (I am not a parent and live elsewhere).

I'll also make some inquiries at the hospital I work in. We're a public/HHC hospital but the Chief of OB and I just put in a grant app to train community women as doulas for our delivery room and cross train them as lactation counselors. Maybe he has the cojones to stand up? I'll let you know.

OMG, that would be AMAZING. Apparently the midwives have contacted like 75 hospitals and no one will give them the time of day. I have a friend due in October with her first, who is planning a homebirth with my midwife.

I'm thinking of doula training, actually. Just because.

97% episiotomy WTF!!?!?!!
Are you serious??
I didn't tear either, and I had midwives too.

If you decide to go for doula training, let me know? I've been vaguely interested for a while, but would be much more into it learning with a friend.
