So, first of all, I want to say that while I ADORE Ursula Le Guin, and Octavia Butler (and I like but don't love Nalo Hopkins) - PLEASE STOP RECOMMENDING THEM TO ME. I own all or most of their books. There ARE other writers both of color, and with colored characters, out there ( Read more... )

I flared, looked at the user name and then laughed :)

Heh. I am a terrible person sometimes. Sorry.

I was at a con where Delaney and Butler were on a panel together. He pointed out every time there is a convention where they are both invited, they end up on panels together even though their fiction has little in common. Delaney said he's never been put on panels discussion say, cyberpunk even though he was friends with many cyberpunk authors and has written some.

I think Delaney is an amazing person, but I'm not a huge fan of his fiction. If I was a guy, I would want to grow up to be him. His big full white beard, his awesoem cane/walking stick, his joyful gayness, and his BRAIN.

Check out this discussion of Genre Tokenism "After the untimely death of the great writer Octavia E. Butler, some have asked who will take her place. A panel of African-descended women currently writing genre fiction addresses this question, talking about Octavia's oeuvre and their own: similarities, differences, market forces, and the pressures to model their contributions to the field on hers. How many ways is this question just plain wrong? Who has a vested interest in there being "an Octavia," new or old? What would "a new Octavia" look like? How does her literary legacy affect the field today, and how might it do so in the future? And how does this legacy relate to this disturbing question?"

Ooh and also list of SF/F books with protagonists who are women of color AWESOME.

And I will pick up Acacia ASAP. It sounds so good.
