Am told that there is "no real race problem in Boston anymore"

*SFX: needle scratching across record*

Say what?!

I think my brain just melted. Was this person capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time?

It was on a poly list. Seriously. But it's not like anyone jumped up to knock his opinion down. I did that by citing my being knifed by a skinhead.

It always astounded me that there were people who didn't notice that Boston was still incredibly segregated. It's not exactly subtle, you know?

LOL, I know.

He said he'd never seen any racism, and neither had his (white) children.

*sigh*

What can you do, except smack a bitch at that point?

ICON LOVE.

Boston: see my reply below to LBS.

Trent: He sounds cool!!! The rigor things fucking makes me insane. At first I took them seriously, and got really fucking rigorous. Now I know that I'm rigorous, and as soon as they see my face they just won't care. See the book "Blink" for an excellent examination on unconcious racism.

School Prep: That is pretty much what we mean by "white privilege". I'm very aware that I not only have to do well for my own integrity, but I was raised to believe that me doing well reflected back onto black people in general. My "defense mechanism" against racism was to be "be better than they are." I remember saying to my Mom after I got into Harvard, "If I can't get a good paying job after both Yale *and* Harvard, I give up."

It's interesting to me that my field is only 0.03% black, but both firms I've worked at have had TWO back workers (myself + 1 other) in a group of six or so workers altogether. We're getting hired by the people who are already inclined to hire us. However few of us there are.
