Looking to buy a new camera

Feb 02, 2012 15:51

So after the flash stopped working on my bottom-of-the-line years-old digital camera, I've decided it's time for a new and much much nicer one. I love B&H. They'll help you but they're not on commission and I've never felt pushed. They've even recommended things that are cheaper than my own first choice. And they're very good about returns if you end up not liking what you buy.

I must say it, before someone else does: "Ya go ta B&H!"

Haven't bought a camera specifically there, but the overall experience, as noted in the comment above, is great.

You're not going to loose going to B&H. They have more cameras on display and some of the sales staff actually know what they're talking about.

Before you do go in, decide on your price range first. That's going to have the biggest influence on what camera you end up with. Then decide if there's some MUST have features like shock-proof or takes AA batteries. There's a pretty astounding selection of cameras out there so its a matter of narrowing down what you can afford and what you need.

If this is something that matters to you, B&H has been sued 3 times in 5 years for discrimination -- and, perhaps worse, when I posted a tweet about their lawsuit, someone from the company tracked down my personal email address just to tell me I was ignorant. I get my (admittedly amateur) camera gear from Adorama and have been pretty happy with the service there.

I've always had good experiences at Adorama. If you're looking for something between a run of the mill p&s and a fancy DSLR, I'd highly recommend the Canon G series. I have the Canon G11, and absolutely love it. It looks like the G12 is now out.

B&H and Adorama are both pretty good. On a side note, have you considered getting a mirrorless camera? I recently purchased one (a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1) while abroad and I love it :)
