Greyhound Busses

Now, before everyone starts telling me how completely horrible Greyhound is...I know. I just have a question about purchasing tickets.

I know buying tickets in advance does not guarantee a seat on the bus, but I was wondering what people's experiences with buying the tickets in person at the Greyhound station (Port Authority) are. Did you find you were better off purchasing your tickets over the phone or online?
