restaurant etiquette question

Last week my boyfriend and I went to a Japanese restaurant.  Before ordering we asked if they had sake.  They said they would give us sake on the house and that in the future if we wanted beer or wine we should bring our own because they don't have a liquor license.  So they gave us a carafe of sake, which was awesome and I was really impressed and ( Read more... )

I agree with your boyfriend. They only gave you the sake for free the first time because you didn't know they don't have a liquor license and they want you to come back again BUT to bring your own alcohol.

They told you in the future to bring your own and that's what I would do.

With that said, I've never heard of a Japanese restaurant that doesn't serve sake.

Well, if they don't have a liquor license yet, then they legally can't serve sake. Maybe they're in the application process or something.

Bring your own. Horribly rude to ask after they were so nice the first time. It was only given because they cannot sell it, so it was probably for their own enjoyment.

You'd definitely be taking advantage of their kindness to expect or even ask for the sake. Don't be a jerk, bring your own.
