Audting ENG college classes?

Aug 15, 2007 10:34

Recently I was told about an option to "audit" college classes and sometimes this can be done for free.

To begin, I may not have the right understanding of what "auditing" is. My intention is to be able to check out specific classes at specific colleges so that I can get a feel for the curricula, level/type of instruction, as well as assess my own level (too low, too high, other) of academic capability *without* having to be a formal student with the program (maybe even college). The main point is that this is unofficial, won't earn credit, etc., etc. (hence it's an "audit" and not even considered a non-matriculated student). Complicating factors is that permission of the professor is required; sometimes also paperwork and permission of the department is required. (I'm hoping it won't require a whole lot of ass kissing, etc.)

Currently I'm a CUNY freshman. My desire to audit a class involves hopefully sitting in at 100 level English classes (maybe LIT classes) at Fordham, NYU, and Columbia. I've been given the name of a specific professor at NYU, but not yet at Fordham and Columbia. My choice of these schools is that I've heard varying feedback that each provides strong fundamentals of good English, specifically writing skills, etc. and they are often tough. Certainly I think CUNY may have strong ENG departments and professors, but I don't know at which schools, professors, etc. If any of you want to recommend professors that you think are worth checking out, please let me know. (If you prefer not to discuss on an open comm, please give me your email, or hit me on my blog, etc.)

Anyone who is more familiar with the intimate ongoings of the private universities, how to schmooze effectively to get this done, or the pros/cons about doing this, please let me know.

Thanks.
