The name of the game was research. A new case landed in his lap and his first chair was too busy being district attorney to do it herself. Besides, it wasn't like he was second chair. He was a junior ADA. It was his job to provide the prosecution with the best evidence out there ( ... )

When Sam walked out of the building, her breath caught in her chest. She had been hoping that this wasn't true. That Tinga was so stoned at the time that she didn't know what she was talking about, but she should have known better. She had started to make moves to get away before he saw her, but apparently she didn't move fast enough for that.

As he approached her, she straightened, reaching to pull off his sunglasses and tried not to take the greeting all that personally. "Funny thing," she said. "Got a call from an old X5 buddy of mine. Said that Sam Winchester arraigned her in court today. At first I thought she had been on one hell of a trip when she showed up in court, but I decided to check it out, just in case."

She paused, before letting her jaw set slightly. "Guess I was wrong."

The arraignment had been late that morning. Quick and - painful. They had tried to remand Tinga without bail, citing her as a flight risk. Unfortunately, the judge wasn't having it. And Tinga was let loose until court reconvened the next day. Sam was sent to work immediately. Now, he wished Tinga had been without bail.

Maybe it only would've been a matter of time until he was discovered. He was promised security.

"She was high," he said, thinking back. "High as a kite but the judge took pity on her. Said she looked harmless." He didn't like this and he didn't know what to do. He thought about this meeting. Just this. But, he had never let himself paint a real picture.

"Don't tell Dean."

"Yeah. That's not going to happen."

Max liked Sam, and she was happy to see him. She really was. But she didn't keep secrets from the people she cared about, and Dean was one of them. She worked with him every day. She wasn't going to lie to him about knowing the whereabouts of his brother when Dean was going to find out anyway.

"Better it comes from me than some dick on the street. Sorry, Sam, but Dean's my next stop."

"You know this isn't personal right?" he asked, a question that he felt had to be posed. She blamed him. In a way, he blamed her too. Maybe they could've been something once upon a time. But, the fairytale had ended when Sam found Dean, John, and a tortured snitch. He never wanted any part of that life.

"I also didn't have your number." He needed to get going anyway. This wasn't going to help his day. And he couldn't stop her.

"Never said this was personal, Sam," she said with a bit of a smirk. She redonned her sunglasses. "Just business. We gotta know where our enemies are, and ever since you walked out the door you made the list."

She was trying to keep it as cool as possible, trying to make it seem like this really was her job and not something she was doing for herself. "You do what you gotta do, Sam. But I'm gonna do the same."

"This isn't some war or personal vendetta. This is my job," he finally said, stepping away from the motorcycle. He gave her the room to ride off and open a destructive can of worms.

"Right. And this is mine," she replied, before starting the bike and pushing away. "See you around, Sam."
