I had every intention of sleeping until 6am today, but the tree outside my bedroom window is home to a large number of birds who start making noise as soon as the faintest hint of dawn becomes noticeable. Most days, they wake me up long before my alarm goes off, and while I can usually manage to block them out and fall back asleep, today I opted not to bother. I rolled out of bed, packed my lunch for the day, and had some breakfast. I've got some time to kill before the morning workout, and I promised someone I'd try to write a new entry this weekend, so here I am.
Remember that last entry, where I talked about getting a gym membership after I got settled into my new place? As it turns out, there was an unexpected bit of foreshadowing in that idea. Not long after the move, I received a job offer that would allow me to finally transition out of retail and into something that offered more stability and more room for growth. Needless to say, I accepted the offer almost immediately, and am happy to report that for the last three weeks, I've been working as an Operations Manager for LA Fitness.
One of the perks? Free membership.
The job is fantastic thus far. It's fast-paced and challenging, and the skills I've developed during my eight years of retail management have been a tremendous asset. Now that I've got a handle on the basics, I'm settling into my comfort zone, hitting my stride. I get up every day and actually look forward to going to work, rather than loathe the idea of leaving the house like I had done for my last few months at the previous job. And the best part? It's a normal schedule, a Monday-Friday job with no nights and no weekends. Getting home at a decent hour every night and actually having free time on weekends is a luxury I haven't experienced for more than eight years. And damn, it feels good.
Considering my new work environment, and keeping with some of the thoughts of my previous entry, it's definitely time to get back in shape. I've worked out sporadically over the past couple of weeks, and I've stopped drinking soda and eating fast food. The pantry and refrigerator are stocked with groceries, and after I finish up this entry, I'll be starting P90x. Again. I achieved some pretty great results with it last year, but the vast majority of that progress has been systematically destroyed over the past few months. It'll be a long road, but this time I'm bound and determined to see it through until the end.
Much like last summer, I'll try to update frequently, as I find that writing about it helps to keep me motivated and focused. Apologies in advance for those of you that will no doubt get sick of hearing about it (*cough* Deb *cough*). Wish me luck.
