someone teach me art history! I'm reading Roy Kiyooka's poetry and would benefit enormously knowing more about dadaism, etc.
I'm going to a BC Lions game next weekend with Chris and Marissa. I want to wear a scarf and drink a beer or few.
The kids I'm teaching are almost entirely non-English majors, but I'll teach them to love it! We're doing THe Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time first, which is a great place to start teaching.
My classes are a bit intimidating so far. My Asian-Canadian Lit prof won the Governor General's award for poetry in 2002 and was just inducted into the Order of Canada. I don't want to sound like an ass in front of him. It's fun because the writer-in-residence this year is Fred Wah, and we're studying one of his books. I'll be a nerd and get it signed, lol. Can I do that? Daphne Marlatt works at the school too. Robert Kroetsch is giving a reading next week, I want to get a book signed by him also. I'm star-struck out here.
I know I said I was coming back to Ontario in two years, but I decided that since Chris has a second year to his program, I might as well try to start a Ph.D next year. Then we can stay for two more years, and I can write my dissertation wherever I want to. I'm going to apply at UBC and SFU. Our department is so young and fresh, I like it already. I'm applying to a Political Science Master's program too, and whatever I get the most funding for I'll do. I always had my heart set on U of T, but I'd be happy with UBC too. There is just so much to do here.
Only downside--I have a class every Monday night, and the three times the Oilers play Vancouver in Vancouver they play on Monday nights. Sucks to that. Have to wait until Jan. 5.
Our place is really nice. It feels like home now. It's pretty big, so I don't feel crowded. And it's nice to have an office to do work in. We painted the bedroom the colour of bamboo, or a bright granny smith apple. It brightens my days.
P.S. It's only rained twice so far, for an hour each time. Apparently it is coming soon though!
