I've been thinking about doing this for quite some time now. This post is, as most things in this blog, more for myself than for anybody else. You see, I have a few memory problems. I tend to have really great ideas, pretty clever insights that come and go all the time. I keep a couple of small notebooks that go everywhere with me to help me record them, remember them, but - of course - sometimes I forget to bring them along.
Now, this is an 'LJ of self-discovery' in a way, so I wanted to write some of the things I think describe me the best. If only to help me remember them whenever somebody asks me to say something about myself.
So, hereby I present, in no particular order, some things you should know about me. Given the nature of this list, I expect to update it every once in a while.
1) The four right chords can make me cry. I particularly like desperately sad songs. There is something about that feeling of complete abandon that makes me feel there is light at the end of the tunnel; that if we can completely forget about ourselves, then there is hope for us. And that feeling of "utter and complete sadness, yet there is hope" - HAN, in Korean, according to the West Wing -, that feeling brings me to tears. I suppose that the same happens when you find a line from a song that is unbearably true and accurate amidst a world of lies.
2) About N°1: I believe that the Korean word 'han', if there is such a word, is the one that represents my life the most. For many years now it has been a constant, and I don't know if that's a good thing. I'm working on it.
3) As of December 12, 2006, I'm a technical and scientific translator (SP / ENG and viceversa). That is someone I get to be forever.
4) My brother Martin is my bestest friend ever. I used to hate him back when we were kids, and I often picked up fights just to make him cry.
5) Most times Sometimes I listen to songs over and over and over without actually *listening* to them. As much as I love words, some songs are just too pretty musically speaking for me to be bothered with meaningful lyrics. If the chords and the voice are *right*, then I can go for months without paying attention to the lyrics. Ergo, when I do, there is a good chance I might invent them to suit what I feel while listening to them.
6) But it's so much better when great songs have perfect lyrics...
7) I love reading, and I love the feeling of perfection that has you choking on your words and gasping for air that some pieces of writing have. In Spanish, that's what Ernesto Sabato has done for me. In English, Oscar Wilde has been the last to affect me that way. Oddly enough, I get that more from fanfiction than from published books. I suppose that being engaged with the topic makes up for whatever it is that disqualifies fanfiction as literature.
8) That moment when you see things so clear in a completely different light, that had never occured to you before? Best. Feeling. Ever.
9) I love Canadian musicians. For real. Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morrisette, Matthew Good. Just a few examples.
10) For some strange reason, I love songs that include the words "she says/said" and/or "wasting time" in their lyrics. Guess what my favorite song is right now? :D
