Sorashige Book (Jul 14)
At the opening, he said he’s now 32, though it’s not like anything is different. He said it’s almost the 5th year anniversary for the programme, and it’s the 420th episode today. (S: Why didn’t we say anything on the 400th episode though!) He thanked the radio for the wonderful cake and said to check the blog out to see how the cake looks like.
The first listener heard the column “GIRL FRIENDS” Shige and Maruyama (Kanjani 8) was ending and is really sad. They wanted to hear any memorable stories Shige has to share about the column. Shige said it’s been about 7 - 8 years and both of them are sad about it since it’s a chance for them to catch up too. They went to Kyoto for the shoot, to a university dorm Shige had been interested in. He’ll share more again after he sees what’s been included in the article. He talked a little about it and hopes people interested can go read up about it. He also shared that he saw lots of leaflets around the school, including quite a few on LGBTQ. He said he’d try to invite Maruyama on the radio after “GIRL FRIENDS” is over though he’s probably busy.

For music club this week, he introduced Sakanaction’s new album “834.194”. While there hasn’t been any official explanations on the album title, there’s been a lot of speculation on the meaning. The album has also been split into 2 discs and it’s probably also up to people to interpret why. He often talks about Sakanaction with air:man. He also said Yamaguchi from Sakanaction is known to like fishing, and Shige hopes to be able to go fishing with him someday. He then played Sakanaction’s “Kikitakatta Dance Music Liquid Room ni”.
A listener wrote in about “Ikitakunai”, noting that Shige has the longest career as a writer out of the 6 whose works were included in the anthology. (S: Ah I see, mine’s the longest? I wish you won’t say that, it’s just long and nothing else) They wanted to know if Shige decided on the title for “Pocket” before or after he started writing. He said he decided after he finished the story and somehow decided on “Pocket”.
Another person wrote in to say their first reaction after finishing “Pocket” was very confused and Shige said yes, he wished he’d receive more comments like that but everyone said things like it was enjoyable, though he’s happy for those too. They read it a second time and realised different things, and that turning everything around at the end is very Shige-like. They shared their thoughts after reading it again and said they like the worldview Shige-sensei creates.
Another listener gave their instinctive comments - it was interesting, and that while “Ikitakunai” is a word with negative connotations, they felt fresh and an increase in bowery and that’s good.
He read another mail on “Ikitakunai” and said they got interested in the tonkatsu napolitan pasta that appeared a few times in the work. Did that actually get served in the school Shige went to? He said nope. To eat junk food topped with junk food is very high school-like and friends he got to read “Pocket” also said tonkatsu napolitan left an impression, saying that it’s very high school-like.
At the end, he said something for Johnny-san, saying that his death happened near his birthday made him recall many things. He’s only where he is because of Johnny-san. He’s never been praised nor chosen for anything before meeting Johnny-san, and he can’t express his thanks to him enough. All his memories with Johnny-san are shiny ones, like precious jewels, and will probably remain with him forever. The journey mustn't have been all smooth sailing for Johnny-san, so Shige hopes he rests in peace and to keep watching over them. He dedicated the “oyasumi” he always says at the end of the programme to Johnny-san.
Kchan NEWS (Jul 16)
The guest this week was Shige. At the top they talked about Johnny’s passing, and how he taught them a lot so they’re thankful. They also said that NEWS went to visit him in the hospital. Koyama asked Shige if he remembered the first time he talked to Johnny and Shige said it might have been his audition. Koyama said it was the same for him, and the first thing Johnny ever said to him was “YOU, come next week too”. They also talked about how Johnny told Koyama that he was coolest when paired with Shige, though he never said it to Shige. They also talked about how Johnny made them steak at his house a lot, and he would make it with butter and some soy sauce.
They also talked about how Johnny made NEWS, and he also told Koyama once that he listened to his radio show and told him to change the title from “Party Time” to “Kchan NEWS” even though Johnny never called Koyama “Kei-chan” but he knew that the fans call him that.
They talked more about how that they’re thankful to him for letting them meet the fans too, and thanked him.

The first letter was from a listener whose pen-name was that they wanted Shige to say their name so Shige tested out saying their name in a few different ways. They brought up how Shige gave Koyama and Massu Air purifiers for their birthdays. They wanted to know if he gave them the same one.
Koyama commented that it was the same one as he watched as Shige ordered them online, and asked is this ok? And he put the quantity to 2. They also talked about the “origotou” incident that Massu’s been really fond of recently. Shige tried to say “arigatou wa?” meaning, “Where’s my thank you?” but accidentally said, “origotou wa?”, “origotou” means oligosaccharide, which is a type of simple sugar. Shige protested that what happened, is that it’s been discussed a few times on different tv programs how Shige doesn’t say thank you, and from that Shige did a lot of reflecting. So he started saying it, but then Koyama who was the one who complained about it so much, then didn’t say thank you or anything. So he said that which ended up coming out as origotou. Massu found this so funny, and laughed really hard, and has been telling lots of people even though it’s a story that has a lot of context that needs to be explained so it’s not a great tv story. But Massu wants to talk about it so badly, he gets really excited about it. He even announced to Shige about how he told the story well on the radio.
K: MASSU’S SO CUTE.
They talked about how they didn’t think it was as funny as Massu found it, and that he’s always had a unique sense of humour. Sometimes he just laughs by himself.
The next letter was from a listener who wished Shige a happy birthday and asked if he asked Koyama for anything.
Koyama asked Shige what he wanted, and Shige started to think about what he wanted there. They talked for a bit about the air purifier. Shige tried to say that he would think on it, but Koyama pushed him to at leat say something, anything not taking price into consideration.
S: What do I want…. A computer!
K: So expensive!!
K&S: HAHAHA
They joked about that a bit longer and Koyama complained about how expensive it is and Shige protested that he had said to not pay attention to the cost. They talked about how when they are just regularly asked what they want, they don’t have a whole lot that comes to mind. Koyama brought up tablets and Shige said that a tablet would be good too, but that he’d want a high spec one. They talked about how if Koyama, Massu, and Tegoshi all got one for him together it could work. It’d be great if Shige wrote his novels using a computer that the other three got him.
♪ Love Story ♪
At the end Koyama said that in the break he looked up the prices of computers and complained that it was definitely way too expensive for him to do himself, they’d all three have to get it. Shige said he needs a full spec one because he makes songs on them too.
Tegomass no Radio (Jul 17)
At the opening, they talked about the monsoon season and how it’s been affecting the filming for “Voice”. Tegoshi asked about “Voice”, the cast, if the script is hard to memorise (since there’s a lot of jargon for detective dramas). Apparently Tegoshi started pointing at Massu and commenting he must be really busy, and Sakura and Massu jumped in on the way he said it and were like, “Are you some producer? You’re younger!” Tegoshi talked about their appearances on the summer music programmes before repeating that attitude and commenting that Massu must be really busy.
The request this week was from a listener who started playing golf for work. They started going for golf regularly with their father and they’d listen to NEWS in the car. Their father, who was completely uninterested before, finally commented that one of the songs sounds nice. And the song’s “Love Story”.

The second mail was from a listener who wrote her comments on “The Music Day”, including how their mother praised Massu for his singing in the shuffle medley (M: Kono jidai no champion wa♪) and how Tegoshi’s “Kurenai” was impressive. M: Go ahead.
T: It’s not a song I can just sing on cue! Fine if it’s like (sings really low) “Kurenai♪”
M: But I sang at the original key. “Kono jidai no champion♪”
T: And me (low) “Kurenai♪”
The listener praised Tegoshi again for his “Kurenai” and asked if they have any stories to share for “The Music Day”.
Tegoshi said he chose “Kurenai” out of a list of about 10 songs he was given, and was down to “Kurenai” and “Daitokai”. NTV was more for “Kurenai” and Tegoshi thought this was a rare chance to sing this live. They said Tegoshi was the only one who didn’t sing a song of his own for the high tone medley, and Sakura said people must have been surprised. Massu said the other NEWS members must have been most surprised though. Tegoshi shared that after the rehearsal for “Top Gun”, he stayed to try singing “Kurenai” to see if he can do it before deciding on the song. Massu had already left for drama filming but KoyaShige were still around. And after they heard him sing they said he should do it too, so he decided to do it. It felt great though it was really tough. They brought up ToshI’s entry on that too, with Tegoshi saying he was at a birthday party with Kyomoto Masaki when he received a text from their music producer with what ToshI wrote on his blog. He cried for the first time in a long while. (T: HAHAHAHHAHAHA) And Kyomoto Masaki patted him. Tegoshi said his two biggest dreams are to sing a duet with ToshI and sing to the piano accompaniment of Yoshiki.
M: I’ll play the piano then!
T: No! Why are you taking the place of Yoshiki? I want to sing to his playing!
M: I’ll do my best with the piano!
T: It’s important to do your best, but that’s not the same!
M: Well I pretty much can’t play anyways.
They said these music programmes open up new opportunities and provide collaboration chances with other artistes and they’re grateful.
The third mail was from a listener whose first grader son asked them what a “treasure” was as they did a lesson on that in school. They told their son “something you hold dearly” and what he brought to the listener while saying “This is my treasure” were NEWS’ merchandise - Massu’s uchiwa and WORLDISTA’s penlight. He was going to bring them to school to show everyone but it was raining, so after the listener told him it’d be sad if Massu got wet and the son left the uchiwa at home. The listener wanted to know what their treasures were when they were kids and if these treasures are still precious now.
They commented that the son is really cute. Tegoshi said his treasures were these Totoro and Pikachu plushies. He has a Pikachu plushie on his sofa now, but it’s not the same one as the one he had as a kid. They asked what happened to the old ones and Tegoshi said his Totoro got burnt when his mum and grandma put it above their stove at home. It was the first time he got angry at them. He still loves plushies and has Pikachu and Ted.
Sakura: What about you Masuda-san?
M: People I guess…
T: That’s the same for everyone! You have to say something unique to yourself!
M: … time?
T: You were the one saying you’re the sempai just now weren’t you?! If you’re that great a sempai you should know the listeners aren’t looking for such answers!
Massu asked Sakura to go while he thinks. Sakura said it’s about the 3,000 copies of manga she owns. She’s read all of them and likes how see them lined up like that. Massu said understands and he prefers physical copies over digital ones, and Tegoshi said he’s gone digital. And finally Massu’s turn.
M: Since Sakura talked about the 3,000 copies of manga she owns… I own like 300 million pieces of this - clothes.

For the quiz segment this week, it was a riddle - what is the person who’s always in a car? They made a few guesses before Tegoshi got it - engine. (playing on the pronunciation of engine as person in Japanese is “jin”)
The next question - balls are usually round, but there are cubic ones too, what kinds of balls are these? Massu got this really fast - cardboard boxes. (this is a play on the Japanese for boxes “danbo-ru” which has “bo-ru”, Japanese for ball in it)
Final question was a riddle too. What is someone near you whose digestive system is always in good shape? Massu got this pretty fast too - president of a neighbourhood association (chonai kaicho, playing on the pronunciation for digestive system “cho” and ways of saying it’s in good shape).
At the ending, they tried to get Tegoshi to tell nuts apart while Sakura was reading the address details. Massu passed him nuts he had to eat them with his eyes closed, then guess which nuts they were. He was terrible and commented on the final nut, “This is the yummiest!”

He shared the story that was also mentioned in “Kayou Surprise” when they appeared on it together, that Karasawa-san bought him clothes he really wanted from a shop he likes. And that Karasawa-san managed to find out which items Massu wanted when he mentioned this shop in one of the conversations, and Karasawa-san phoned the shop to ask if there was anything else he wanted but didn’t get. The fifth mail is from a listener who has a twin and said they thought twins were common as there were eight pairs during their elementary till middle school days.
