I'm already on Dreamwidth; they do it better. Access and subscriptions are completely orthogonal.

But why? Just why?

This just adds yet another layer of complication. It doesn't help. It's like DW's system, which really do not like.

Why do you want to be 'just like everyone else'? Especially when you promote your uniqueness and how LJ is so different and not just another social media platform.

Honestly, this was yet another not-needed feature. Just another way to drive people away from LJ.

It is not mandatory though, those who do not find it useful can just ignore it and not use it and they won't even see it at all.
More flexibility is always better, people use LJ in different ways and it is good to have a choice of features especially when they are so easy to ignore as this one for those who are not interested.

The link, below, was another HUGE reason that a lot of folx went away from LJ, and - quite frankly! - it makes me a little nervous, too.

LJ: When will you print the following in ENGLISH???

<9> Shame you killed the website though. My f-list has been an empty desert since the ToS debacle.

Yup. And a new feature that Dreamwidth has offered from Day 1 isn't going to bring any of those people back here. :(

Aye. A rapid apology, a conciliatory statement to the community, and a rolling back of the requirement, might have brought the people back. But, LJ yet again saw no problem, no need to engage with their users, and, apparently no recognition of there being a problem.

This kills me because I remember when I first joined in 2001 how much they would interact and in most cases even ask lj users to set up things and work for them and help them to make it successful. It pains me so much that what we say falls on deaf ears. If you get bored take a look back at news from 2000-2005 and see how much of lj was built from users.

Nice, good to see this is finally possible. Wish it had been implemented earlier, but late is definitely better than never.
