To begin with - /feed is less convenient but overloaded with unneeded stuff than /friends.

Absolutely. LJ will NEVER get me to use /feed willingly - no matter how many times they log me out and then redirect me to /feed when I log in again. It's a horrible interface - not to mention the lack of ability to use my own customised page with personalised banner etc.
