At long last, we're pleased to announce a new feature. Now, in journal and community entries, there's a button you can click to show the author you liked their entry.

Please do not make LJ like FB. It is a very different platform. If you must add this feature, then please make it so that anyone can opt out for their LJ.

Making the feature so that anyone who doesn't want it can opt out of it for their LJ is a good idea. Offering a lot of different features is great for people who want a lot of different features, but making many of them optional is great for people who are more selective. Then each person can have as many or as few features as they want.

You know, I don't think that's a good idea, either. If you make it optional, then a lot of readers will stop reading the journals that don't have the button, because OMG INCONVEEEEEEENIENT. Give people a chance to be lazy, and a LOT of them will take it, and abandon anything that requires even a tiny bit of effort.

But surely that should be up to the owner of the specific LJ journal. If I don't want the "like" option and am willing to have people stop reading my journal, that should be my choice.

You assume that every option possible should be available on every site. The absence of like buttons is one of the things that makes LJ DIFFERENT. That's why so many of us don't want it. If we wanted Facebook, WE'D BE AT FACEBOOK.

It's not as simple as "if you don't like it, don't use it". The PRESENCE of these buttons changes the way people use a site. At every site where they appear, comments and interactions goes DOWN. People stop saying anything. At AO3, comments are almost nonexistent anymore because everyone takes the lazy route and just clicks a button. That will happen here, and everything we love about LJ will be gone. It'll just end up with writers getting "likes" and never any real reactions. What's the point? You might as well just scribble in a diary.

Very true. That's what these people who say "Don't use it if you don't like it," or "Just use an older layout, because you're all sooo negaaaaaaatiiiiiive," don't get.

It does change the over all feel of lj. I can see it even here in the comments.

I would prefer that the feature not be added. If it must be added, make it so that I can opt out. I agree that the presence of the buttons will change the site and not necessarily for the better.
