Because it's a completely new way of coding the comment page, a completely new way of coding the preview function is also needed. Coding does not happen in two minutes, and they quite likely cannot use the old comment pages' preview code because it is too different. Extending editing to everyone is an immediate solution, because it only requires telling the servers to allow more users access to an existing function.

I'm still boggled as to what was wrong with the old code in the first place, because this one looks like a bag of blended assholes.

Knowing that, why would they not have ironed everything out prior to rolling it out to everybody?

Hindsight is 20/20 but they are going on more than ten years of dealing with a very vocal and easily annoyed user base. You would think they might have figured these things out by now.

Oh, I quite agree on that point. They should have gotten and paid more attention to feedback, and taken care that they're not taking away functionality, before releasing. I was merely explaining why they can't just magically put preview in the new one with the snap of fingers.

I totally get that. I think a lot of people (while maybe not the vocal minority) understand that, and I think that most people are much less annoyed that the preview isn't being done Right Now OMFG and more that this was done so prematurely and without taking in feedback.

Perhaps they should have done more than a week (per igrick) of beta-testing.

I absolutely agree.

Then they shouldn't put the release live until they've sorted it out. I honestly cannot understand how these people still have jobs.

OK, I'll buy the completely new way of coding the preview function as an excuse. Except that means they should NOT have released the new comment pages until they had finished coding ALL the features that exist on the old style pages. Especially since it appears that no one was demanding a new comment page, so there was no rush. They could have taken the time to code it properly.
