I'm not sure calling it "a service issue that sprung up a couple days ago and was quickly resolved" adequately summarizes things. That sounds like the website was slow for twenty minutes, not like people might have been served up your locked entry.

That and the fact that it was major news and belongs in this post. LJ is doing such a mediocre job with their customer service that it's a joke at this point. They even mention that it wasn't a breach in security, though it obviously was.

Calling it a service issue isn't calling it a security issue. Tremendous difference, and some might consider it deceptive.

LJ, do you know what a lie is? A lie is a clear falsehood, ie, not telling the truth.

"Over twenty four hours" is not "a short time." This is a lie. Honesty: we users like it.

In a way that a: does not even explain what the issue WAS, b: lies about how long it lasted, and c: clearly attempts to brush it under the rug. WORLDS of not impressed.

This is a serious issue and you should be messaging every single user to tell them what happened. The fact that some random user could have seen a person's Private LJ entries etc is a serious security concern whether or not they could edit etc. PEOPLE KEEP SERIOUS PERSONAL INFO UNDER PRIVATE-LOCK. I don't, but if I did and hadn't heard about this problem - which many people haven't - things like my bank details could be at risk, because people private-lock password lists etc.

I'm not at all minimizing what happened - but please tell me people aren't storing their bank details and password lists on a social networking site, even under lock. Are people actually doing that??

I don't think bank details, no - but since a lot of people use only one or two passwords over a lot of sites, password lists are v helpful in this regard. And I agree it's crazy, but people are doing it, so LJ has to warn them.

Unfortunately, livejournal itself stores billing information for paying users and doesn't seem to have an option to erase that information.

True, but my understanding is that what people saw was cached copies of journal entries, not LJ's stored billing info. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

I've also heard about folks having access/ being able to view other users their inboxes, which can contain all kinds of info.
