But, we can’t ignore the fact that as LiveJournal nears its second decade it needs to make some business decisions

No. According to current policy, only NEW accounts will not have the Basic option. They're not changing CURRENT Basic accounts into Plus accounts.

Whether this policy will change in the future, I don't know.

I think perhaps this is exactly what everyone is worried about. Is this just the first step in bending us to their will. Though, at this point I almost wish people would shut up. We're giving them ideas. -_-;;;
