But advertising doesn't have to do with the business end of LJ? I don't see how celebrating DIET PEPSI MAX month is newsworthy.

Policy clarifications do NOT have to do with the business end of LJ. They have to do with the very core substance of LJ -- what users can and cannot post (or even link to). If they're not going to clarify their TOS (which obviously, for legal reasons, they're not going to), they should make announcements about POLICY on the news pages and new ways for Six Apart to make MONEY on the business community.

I don't really care one way or the other; I'm not righteously offended by ads, and the more they fuck up the funnier it is to me. But I just don't understand how they think this is the way to run a business that is driven by user-generated content. If you piss off your users, you don't really have much of a site left to sell to advertisers. The reason they moved the discussion to lj_biz was to get it out of the public eye so the smallest number of users possible would know there was anything controversial going on -- that's their idea of not-pissing-off-the-users. Problem is, doing stupid shit like that only gets the people who DO know about it even more riled up, and they create a giant stink that's even worse than what would have happened if LJ had dealt with everything straightforwardly in the first place.
