akjdhalkjg I really wanted this to be lighter, but, um... well, it's my own damn fault for not believing in happy endings this go round.

1946 and Sam rides the rails like an old man, eyes forward, hands clutching the door of the car. He's a rawboned seventeen and he wears the same face as so many of the vets shipping back. He sees them everywhere, men with no clothes but their uniforms, men with nothing but a duffle and a thumb to stick out. He talks to every one that he sees blousing his trousers; every paratrooper he can find, he checks for the Screaming Eagle patch. You Airborne? Hundred and first? Which battalion? Know anyone from Easy? He gets in a lot of fights. Guys don't want to talk. Nobody's ready, and nobody wants to discuss the generation of men sent forth to go break and be broken. Their jobs are done. Sam thinks they're lucky
