1. The dark shape above him snorts. "At ease, lieutenant."
Nixon starts awake, thick red dirt tumbling down the back of his collar, and he scrabbles to his feet. "How's your recon going?" the voice continues. Before Nixon can explain himself, Sink leans slightly over the hole. "I don't care how goddamned rich your family is. You learn how not to get your boys killed, you understand me?" Nixon agrees to do this, stammeringly, and Sink seems to nod. "Good. Now get the hell out of here and finish your exercise."
He's sure glad Sink wasn't close enough to smell him.

2. Nixon cracks one eye open, enough for a serious sidelong glance. "You really think this was the best idea?"
Winters hugs his coat closer. "Learn to love it, Nix. We're going to war soon."
"I noticed that," he grumbles. "I just don't understand why it has to be against the state of Tennessee."

3. Crouching in the ditch with Popeye Wynn on his left and Rod Bain on his right, German artillery overhead and French soil beneath him, Nixon can't believe it took him this long to realize, fully, that shit, he's really here.

4. "Hey. Hey Tommy, that you?"
The replacement clutches his gun to his chest when Nix peers out from beneath the tarp. "Not anymore," he says, raspy with the cold. The replacement swallows and wanders back through the trees.

5. Years later, when things got quiet and he was lying awake somewhere, there were times Nix heard his heart beating in his ears and only thought of Bastogne.

6. Nixon stares. "You took a picture. You actually took a picture."
Winters smirks a little, and folds his hands in his lap.
Nix shakes his head. "Well, somebody ought to remember VE Day for me, I guess."
