Okay, guess who seriously needs to step away from reading through every post at the WBG Forums?

So, most lately yoinked from ceitfianna! Five times [character] [situation] *and one time they didn't. Sock it to me. BoB gen only, since I'm notoriously bad about actually completing these? Will happily focus on Guarnere, Babe, Liebgott, Doc Roe, Bull Randleman

1. "You see him?" Bill points with the hand holding his cigarette. "You know where that guy is at all times. That's Doc Roe. Worst fuckin' job in the army. You keep him in your sights, and just hope you never need him."
Babe gulps down his beer and tries to force the memory. All these new faces, all these new names, and how's he supposed to remember someone so drawn and quiet?

2. Babe walks Joe Toye to the aid station, hardly able to see straight, the both of them. Babe can't keep straight Stay here, I'll go look and I checked, he's gone and all he can do is make sure someone looks after Joe. That's the first time he sees the doc at work. He doesn't say anything. He doesn't know how Gene Roe isn't sick every minute of the day.

3. They've all got their positions, but it's the doc who moves around. Babe wonders what he talks to all the guys about. The first conversation they had was about God, and it all went downhill from there. "What are you anyway?" he'd asked, his teeth clattering like bottle caps on train tracks. Roe told him he was a Catholic, and Babe said something like "Yeah?" and he pressed his fist against the spot where he wore his scapular, and remembered Roe's hands holding together some man's chest.

4. How the chocolate smells like anything, Babe has no idea. It's so goddamn cold. Three guys sitting in a hole in fucking Belgium. How's anybody supposed to keep it together like that?
The doc's voice is low and warm. Babe feels blindly toward it, but keeps his eyes trained forward. He'll get to the other senses later.

5. Gene doesn't know what to do in Germany. Nobody's shooting and he can't stop waiting for somebody to fix. Everybody pretty much leaves the doc alone, but Babe finds him sitting on a hill, looking out at the water, and listens to him tell stories about American places with strange French names.

6. "You were very good, very good." Babe keeps on shaking the boy's hand. The boy is English, and very humble. Babe doesn't look away for a moment. "That never happened like that exactly, but you, you were very good."
