I'm so glad someone has finally picked the "ignorant heathen" option. :-D
Alec twisted in his seat, trying to grip Max's waist and scan the road at the same time. "Are they following us? I don't think they're following us. Why aren't they following us?"
"Because I'm fast and they suck," Max monotoned. She took a hard turn that forced Alec to cling tighter.
"Hey! Are you trying to throw me here?" He spat hair out of his mouth as it whipped behind her.
"Don't you think I'd have already dumped you if I had a choice?"
Alec laughed. "Oh, right, that's right, you're still sorry you inflicted me on the world."
Maybe it was his imagination, but maybe her back got a little stiffer just then. "I was angry when I said that."
"No kidding, Maxie. Not that I'm not grateful for you busting in and saving the day -- though not too soon, I'd like to note, which hurts my feelings a little, I've got to say--"
"Alec, I'm trying to make a getaway here. Are you gonna sit there and yap at me or can I drive?"
"I don't know, Max, maybe I'd better seize my opportunity to ask where the hell all your 'we've got to stick together' went the moment it was me in trouble. I notice you're perfectly ready to believe that Joshua's got a psycho twin alibi, but Alec? Oh no, he must be guilty, 'cause it's Alec!"
She skids to a halt in an ill-lit alley. "I said I was sorry, all right?" she snaps, kicking the stand up and dismounting.
"Actually, you didn't," he points out. "Where are we?"
"Close to my place," she says, and he can't tell if she's sullen or tired or just plain apathetic, because God forbid Max exhibit intonation or facial expressions. "You can't be seen out there. We'll lie low for a few hours until you can go somewhere else."
He shrugs inside his jacket, heavy against his shoulders. "Is this what it takes for you to invite me over to your place? If I'd have known better, I'd have gotten dropped by the cops way sooner."
She turns on him. "Just shut up, okay? For once? This isn't easy for me either."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Max sighs. "Just... come upstairs. I wasn't thinking before, but I'm trying to help you here."
Alec thins his lips, and bites back a slew of further commentary. Neither of them is happy about this, but they slip inside nonetheless, no choice to wait it out.
There is no actual reason why Max should so repeatedly have kicked his ass throughout the whole show. Ten more years of training, fighting dirty or not. I'm sorry, she can't always win.
...give me a situation where Alec completely pwns Max, and deserves to, and isn't sorry about it in the least. :-D?
"I don't think I remind you of Ben," says Alec one day, as they're sparring in the middle of Terminal City.
Max raises her eyebrows, aiming a punch at his jaw (which he deflects with an ease which annoys her to no end). "What do you mean?"
"You said you see Ben when you look at me and that's why you're such a bitch to me sometimes. Remember?" Max nods warily, and Alec shrugs. "I don't think that's it at all."
He feints right, and Max falls for it, cursing when he recovers and lands a hard blow to her back ("Kill her," says Mole, who is so going to pay for it later). "Son of a.....what do you think it is, then?"
Her voice is mocking, but he's perfectly serious when he answers, shrugging his shoulders like it should be obvious. "I think I remind you of yourself."
".....what?" Max stares at him in disbelief, momentarily forgetting the crowd watching them. "I think I've hit you in the head a few times too many."
"Think what you like." Alec shrugs again. "But when you met Logan, you were a cat burglar, working at Jam Pony just so you could stake out places to rob...and before you point out that I'm, you know, a cold-blooded murderer or whatever, let me just remind you that the last time I killed anyone it was at least partly self-defense, and before that? Manticore."
Max scowls, not wanting to admit that Alec has a point. As far as she knows, the last person he killed was that panther transgenic, and she believes him (though she would rather not) when he says that it wanted to kill him. And she certainly can't argue with the fact that Manticore had a way of making you do what they wanted, or to make you seriously regret it if you didn't.
Alec, possibly sensing her unspoken admittance, grins cheekily at her. "Face it, Maxie. You look at me and see your past, and it makes you feel bad about yourself - because Logan's turned you into the Moral Majority or some shit - and so you take it out on me because, unlike you, I have no desire to change myself to please the Ordinaries." She gapes at him, and he steps up to her, reaching up to pat her on the cheek affectionately. "That's okay, Max, sweetie," he croons, patronizing. "I won't tell anyone."
Max growls and swings at him, and he grabs her wrist and steps to the side, using her momentum to put her face-down in the dirt. Amid catcalls from the crowd, he plants his foot in the small of her back, pinning her down, and twists her arm until it's almost painful. "I'm done holding back with you, Maxie," he says seriously. "Physically and otherwise. So brace yourself, sweetheart, 'cause it's gonna be a rough ride."
