In honor of me not yet starting to write NaNo stuff today

Nov 21, 2015 11:55

I am thisclose to murdering my next-door neighbor, who has a truly baffling concept of what keeping your music to yourself means. So:

Multifandom fic recs for a nice Saturday

kvikindi wrote "On the Uses and Disadvantages of Living Among Spectres," a Rivers of London Nightingale POV story that nails the voice and leaves room for more. (It's listed as Part 1/2, but this writer doesn't leave WIPs out to dangle, so.)

august_the_real and
pene wrote "Retina Burn" in 2002; it's this deeply felt, deeply observed sort-of-but-not-but-almost-but-but-but CJ/Toby thing about how they meet in college and just go from there. Really incredible character work.

ashisfriendly wrote "Truth or Dare," which is just really darling/explicit Parks & Rec Ann/Leslie first time. That's it, that's all you need.

otter wrote "Numqvam tē tradam," which I suspect is along the lines of a lot of The Martian returning-to-Earth fic we'll see at Yuletide this year, and I'm just really happy about it. Beck/Johanssen/Watney and good voice and good feelings and good jokes.

General writing resource stuff
  • 6 Ways to Firm Up Your Novel’s Saggy Middle, which I am definitely going to need in the future, as I just sort of skipped over the whole middle of my NaNo and went straight for the end.
  • Sometimes Writers Block Is Really Depression, from author Mary Robinette Kowal, nails it.
  • Rebecca Skloot, the journalist behind The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, has a good list of resources that apply to fiction and nonfiction alike.
  • Writing advice in 10 minutes from Patti Smith, and OMG, it's great.
  • Rejection letters what they really mean - i.e., it's not automatically that you're terrible and will never make it as a writer.
  • 30 Uncommon Character Development Questions is a meme, but it's also probably a good writing exercise.
  • 10 Significant Factors That Helped Me Get Published from Delilah Dawson is just good to hear and reiterate.
  • Writing with a busy schedule, from StoryStudio Chicago
  • Kurt Vonnegut on writing, his famous eight tips.
  • Fantasy, Fairy Tales and Science Fiction from the Jewish Book Council - I've read some of these, and am pretty intrigued by others.

    And finally,
JezebelCharms is good jewelry for book and knowledge nerds. Give it a look-see.
