Ohmygosh, I have spent today trying to pare down all the links I have saved in
One Tab, which is an absolutely amazing Chrome and Firefox extension, but which had swelled into a really terrifying collection of articles to read and Tumblr posts to maybe reblog or watch or ingest later. Now my drafts folder on Tumblr is huge, but I'm down to a much more manageable number of saved links, which will probably come out in a second (or third?) link-dump after this one.
Ah yes, so -- I've been holding on to some of these for quite a while! Enjoy? Certainly on the second half, enjoy!
This shit will stress you out.
The New Racism: "This is how the civil rights movement ends." Distressing, dispiriting, enraging.
Signal Fires on the Tibetan Plateau: "What happens to a tethered windhorse? To a prayer stuck in your throat? On self-immolation in Tibet."
War is turning us into Facebook monsters: Sounds like about where I am with Middle Eastern politics on social media.
How to Get Back to Narnia: I remember reblogging this essay and remembering, vividly, the moment in which I realized I was not welcome in Narnia - the moment when I realized who the dwarves in The Last Battle were supposed to be.
It’s not just Jill Abramson: Women everywhere are getting pushed out of journalismPair with (for some relief) 16 women whose digital startups deserve Vox-level plaudits
Confessions of an Awkward Teen Girl: "Men aren’t the only ones who go through the sexual rejection that Elliot Rodger experienced. Plenty of teen girls do too."
The Case Against Sharing: "The sharing economy’s success is inextricably tied to the economic recession, making new American poverty palatable. It’s disaster capitalism. 'Sharing' companies are not embarrassed by this - it appears to be a point of pride."

How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing: I think this link came up on my Twitter feed hours after I used TurboTax to file this year. Sigh.
Millennials Aren’t Generation Y, We’re Generation Omega: "Stories about Millennials’ character flaws aren’t just wrong; they’re cover for the real perpetrators of crimes against the future."
Pair with Generation Nice, a more upbeat/hopeful look, despite the goofy title
Higher Ed’s For-Profit Future: "Few universities have embraced the corporatization of higher education with arms as wide as the University of Chicago." Sigh. There are things about my beloved alma mater that really disappoint me, and this is one of them. I'm going to cling to one of our surviving institutions, our super weird (and actually fun) application essay questions.
