So hey, today has been a very good day overall! The snow is still beautiful, the
anatomically correct animatronic deer still delight me, and I got a haircut! (Also eyebrow waxing, but I'm still a little on the fence about how that turned out.)
I also got to see The Hobbit! Or, well, Desolation of Smaug, I guess. What are we calling it?
Both my friend and I agreed that it flew by really quickly, in an enjoyable way. The plot didn't seem that tight, but it's really quite a middle film and mostly episodic anyway, so, no matter, in the end, I guess! Question, though: does the next one come out in December or July? I seem to remember a summer release date for the concluding installment, but I may be off the mark (and apparently too lazy to look it up myself).
I really enjoyed Tauriel! I REALLY enjoyed the Tauriel/Kili thing they were pushing on us. REALLY ENJOYED IT. MORE PLEASE, FANDOM. And don't screw it up/be awful about it! uglylaughter.wav
Not nearly enough Lee Pace/Racist Party Dad Thranduil. I'm intrigued by his creepy "my face may not actually be here!" thing. I was hoping for more party, I think; extended edition, maybe? I enjoyed Legolas too: he was very uncanny valley, just, I think, as he should be. A lot of his fighting just looked like a video game character, though.
(I will say that I noticed a lot more "this is a Peter Jackson movie so we're going to have TRIPPY/SWOOPING camera work" -- maybe that's just a cumulative thing. Eh. Oh well.)
The Necromancer/Sauron black stuff effect = CREEPY AS HELL. And there was an elegance about that Sauron figure that wasn't there in the original trilogy, where he was more a Destroyer-from-Thor figure. Call it Cumberbatch's influence on the character, which I guess he also voiced/performed? That was really cool!
SMAUG WAS SUPER EXCELLENT. I approve of everything about Smaug generally, pretty much.
THORIN. I cried when he came back into Erebor. I have such a thing about homecomings after exile, guys. Such a thing. Oh Thorin.
This film would have benefitted 300% from more Gandalf and Galadriel flirting. I wish I had more thoughts on Stephen Fry and his toady Wormtongue-like lacky. I like Bard! He seems to need more fleshing out, but I enjoy him and am interested to see where the next one takes him.
Everyone in the theater groaned at the blackout at the end, but really, there was... no other place for them to end this installment. And again, yeah, overall, generally pretty satisfied! Very much looking forward to the rest of my catching-up-at-the-movies days this month and beyond.
