Of the
zillion and a half things to do this weekend, I've managed to prioritize today between Printer's Row and the True Blood premiere. As soon as I post this I'm heading out to get some things together for the latter, but there were some splendid buys at the former!
custardpringle fell down on the job and failed to prevent me from spending money, but seriously, how was I supposed to resist? I snagged a signed copy ("Take it easy, but take it") of
American Dreams by Studs Terkel, whose memoir Touch and Go was my train reading, as well two personalized copies of (!!!! THIS MAKES ME SO EXCITED)
Who We Were: A Snapshot History of America, aka the
Square America book. Present for my parents, hurray!
Also, because there are always people selling incredible old prints (and vintage postcards, and magazines, and... and... and...), I
couldn't say no to this one:
AHHH, THIS NEEDS A FRAME. Check out the ring box on the sailor's knee!
Look at HER SHOES.
February 21, 1942, ladies and gentlemen.
There were a ton of tank-related ads and articles and war bond notices, which, on the train back, I wished I had been able to snag one for
skew_whiff. (The tank balancing on a steel beam against a red field was really cool.) There was another that really struck me, but I went with the above in a toss-up: it was another magazine cover, in which an older wife is brushing off the lapels of her husband, who is wearing a WWI uniform, as he's about to leave the house, possibly for a parade or a meeting. They're standing on the front porch, and a huge American flag is hanging outside their house. A WWII GI is leaning on the rail of their front steps, grinning. I almost got off the platform and ran back to buy it, but I realized I was more taken with the implications of the image than the image itself, and that it wasn't really something I wanted hanging up in my apartment. Anyway, I'll try and find a picture of it somewhere online -- it might have been a Collier's cover too, or maybe a Harper's.
Speaking of True Blood, holy cow, guys, have you seen
Jessica's vlog site? LOVE. IT. Happy Season 3, WILFs and VILFs and others as yet unrevealed!
