30 Things About My Invisible Illness You May Not Know
1. The illness I live with is: diabetes
2. I was diagnosed with it in the year: 1991
3. But I had symptoms since: 1991
4. The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make is: multiple daily injections
5. Most people assume: i can't eat sugar
6. The hardest part about mornings are: waking up high
7. My favorite medical TV show is: House! or maybe Casualty...
8. A gadget I couldn’t live without is: my testing meter
9. The hardest part about nights are: going to bed high and waking up constantly because i need a wee and a drink. OR, waking up low, being completely disorientated, tripping up over everything whilst i stumble to the kitchen to find fast acting carbs
10. Each day I take 1 injection of lantus and an injection of novorapid every time i eat
11. Regarding alternative treatments I: am very, very, very skeptical
12. If I had to choose between an invisible illness or visible I would choose: invisible, as it's all i've known.
13. Regarding working and career: i work full time and intend on completing a degree.
14. People would be surprised to know: how a hypo can make you feel. there are no words.
15. The hardest thing to accept about my new reality has been: it isn't new for me so n/a
16. Something I never thought I could do with my illness that I did was: i've never thought there's anything i can't!
17. The commercials about my illness: focus heavily on type 2
18. Something I really miss doing since I was diagnosed is: FRUIT JUICE. as a drink rather than a hypo stop.
19. It was really hard to have to give up: n/a as i don't remember my diagnosis all that well.
20. A new hobby I have taken up since my diagnosis is: haha. learning the carb content of pretty much every food stuff known to man?
21. If I could have one day of feeling normal again I would: relax.
22. My illness has taught me: that i always need to listen to my body and to my testing meter!
23. Want to know a secret? One thing people say that gets under my skin is: 'does that hurt?' it's an injection, yes it does. 'doesn't it freak you out?' not really, no, i'd die without it.
24. But I love it when people: show a genuine interest and actually want to learn about type 1.
25. My favorite motto, scripture, quote that gets me through tough times is: that a ship is safe in the harbour, but that's not what it was built for.
26. When someone is diagnosed I’d like to tell them: that everything will seem overwhelming, but it's going to be okay.
27. Something that has surprised me about living with an illness is: how normal everything associated with it (injections, testing, carb counting, etc) becomes
28. The nicest thing someone did for me when I wasn’t feeling well was: when i was about 9, i had a hypo in mcdonalds. a man gave me a mars bar because he was diabetic too and knew what i was feeling like.
