Early 60s pop pretty much paved the way for how music is presented and executed today. From the Beatles to the Byrds, a sound could be found by any music fan. I was exposed to all sorts of bands from this era as a child, knowing many of the lyrics by heart and being able to play a few by ear on the piano. After punk rock, this genre of music is probably my favorite.
For me, the music of the Beach Boys has always one I've come to over and over again. The harmonies still give me goosebumps and its simple hapy music. I always smile whenever a song of theirs play, and with Brian Wilson's songwriting, you could see into the depths of his wistful soul and learn something about yourself. Only few albums have touched me the way that The Beach Boys', Pet Sounds has, being my favorite of their albums and quite frankly one of my all-time favorite albums.
I love how romantic this album is. I might get pummeled for this, but I always considered this album one of the first "emo" albums, from how wounded and tragic some of the songs are, but being able to be uplifting and hopeful in the search for the perfect love song. Wouldn't It Be Nice is my absoulte favorite, discussing how the fantasies of being with the woman he loves and knowing that it will never prevail. Song after song, you know that they could have meant something to someone else and for that reason alone, this album is not just a classic, but a handbook to making an album, full of emotion and helpess longing, yet finding a place in the hearts of millions.
