Year in Review: Favorite Debuts

Dec 09, 2009 19:01

Hey!

Sorry for the mishap yesterday with the playlist, but it is now up and running. Here. Please enjoy!

Today, I'll discuss my three favorite debuts for this year, from three different genres. They have given me great joy over the past 12 months, even seeing two live. Regardless of their relatively new popularity, they've made an impact on the music industry, rather big or small.

The Big Pink

The London duo's debut album, A Brief History of Love, was one of the few albums to present a different approach to a popular sound, creating something completely new. With aspects taken from veterans, TV on the Radio, with a stage presence and swagger similar to The Clash, it's hard to resist their music. Even with less than original lyrics, I found some of my favorite songs on this album and a lifetime fan.

Tonight

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

This Southern Californian band has been the golden group since their debut performance at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, TX. With the size of ten musicians, and the sound of such bands as Crosby, Stills, and Nash, you have one of the best, if not the best new band of 2009. Folk music with feeling, the first in a long time.

40 Day Dream

Antennas Up

Maybe my most unexpected choice, I discovered this band through gracepoetic and took to them well. While their sound is more funk and soul, they seem to bring humor to their lyrics. I had the pleasure of actually meeting them when I saw them perform back in March and not only are they great musicians, they're decent people. Maybe that's not the criteria for a band, but it's not something bad either.

Agree to Disagree

Come back tomorrow for my Surprises and Disappointments of this year, with a few bad and good album covers for fun.
