Hey everyone!
Yeah, so I know this is late, but so it goes. I just have one album to review today, but it's a really great album, so it deserves its own post. This band has always been on the cutting edge of sound and presentation, differentiate themselves from the masses and after over twenty years, they're still ahead of their time.
And we're back. That's how it felt after the long-awaited Christmas On Mars released late last year with the promise of more work following. What we received was every wild and strange sound you have come to expect from a Flaming Lips, underlined with an excitement that was nearly contagious. Despite the six year hiatus, due to other projects including weird films being made on the side, we could rely on them to produce good music, during any stage of their incredible career. This newest installment is no exception.
I had been listening to the free streaming of this album for the past week until its release when I broke down and bought the physical copy, I was reminded what music is supposed to be like. That anticipation for a release and how you can't think of nothing else but the way each note will sound traveling into your ears. I miss that feeling. There's few bands I get that excited for these days. I enjoy a vast amount of music, as you can tell, and I'm fortunate enough to receive promo copies from friends in the business, but the actual waiting, and the ownership of music is something I'm beginning to miss a great deal. I have only been an active participant in the last ten years, and during the age of technology and the constant progression in music's delivery, its rare to have that kind of exposure and still crave for a physical product.
This band happens to be one of them. I can always rely on them to delivery quality music without the pretension. It's direct, but not exaggerated. It has that vintage Lips sound, but still the freshness that begs to be listened to on a loop. It seems to be taken with such care, but unlike others in this genre, there's no pressure into handling it the same way. It's good music, as it should be.
This song that I think that stuck out to me the most is Evil. Its stark without being too ambitious. It kind of rings true to the contrasts this band has again and again expressed over the years. While the strings seem to transcend the melody, the lyrics keeps it grounded, despite the title. I got to see this song performed at Pitchfork this year and it is just as magical. Regardless if you're an old or new fan, Lips always seem to create a frenzy before the storm, and the storm is a long way off.
Choice Tracks: Evil, I Can Be A Frog, and See the Leaves
Have a great day!!!
