Eels and Patrick Wolf

Hello Music Lovers!

Today's entry is pretty fun, since one of them is a band I've loved since childhood and another one that I've just got into in recent months. Fun times ahead.

First one is Eels, Hombre Lobo

From the time I was about eight or nine, I loved this band. Beautiful Freak was my must-have album whenever we went on long car rides with my father. I had to hear me some Novocaine for the Soul or Rags to Rags. Yeah, I had some weird taste as a child and really hasn't changed, heh. Anyway, I have always enjoyed this music, on the surface it seems like a pop band, but they are dark and moody, which makes everything else a little better. And over the years, they haven't changed much, only going darker as the albums progressed.

I had pre-ordered this album about a month ago, very excited about the fact it would be their first album in nearly four years. They've released B-sides and a few live albums, all which I own, but nothing is better than some fresh tunes and Hombre Lobo delivers. The opener, Prizefighter, comes out of the gate like its actually fighting. Without it being said, this is my new wake-up song. I just want to run around screaming, ready to rock the day. My favorite song though has to be In My Dreams. It's so pretty and is a simple love ballad. Another standout is All the Beautiful Things, which is resonant to the old Eels sound that I fell for so long ago. Mr. E... I love your voice and I love you. Never change, kthanx.

Choice Tracks: Prizefighter, In My Dreams, and All the Beautiful Things

Second album is Patrick Wolf's The Bachelor

I had gotten into him back in January when I had come across his album, Wind in the Wires, falling madly in love with it. It was weird and kitch and really liked his voice. It was darker than I thought it would be, seeing his soft, gentle looks on the cover. But he took his angst-ridden lyrics and but them to the beats that reminded me of early Echo and the Bunnymen meets Jeff Buckley. Needless to say, it was a match made in heaven for me. Moving on through the rest of his catalouge, as young as he is, 25, he has established some great tunes and direction in his work and this new installment seems to be different, but still good. .

What I enjoyed most about this album is his more hard rock direction. It still has the synch-pop going, but it's more subdued, letting his deeper range taking the forefront more or less his insturments. He is an accomplished instrumentalist, playing about ten different ones throughout the album, so it's a very fun listen. I think I prefer his earlier work more, but I think I could learn to love this one as much as I did the others.

Choice Tracks: Oblivion, Vulture and The Messenger
