skating babble, period dramas

Well, the happiest season of all is upon us: the figure skating season! So I don't feel too bad about missing the Civil War Harvest ball for lack of a dress, because skating was on TV that day! It's so nice to get reacquainted with all one's favorite skaters again and see their lovely new programs, but it can be a mixed bag. I love love love Rachael Flatt's skating, but I think trying to go to college full time AND skate is absolutely a terrible idea for her. I've never seen her skate a program as badly as she did at Skate Canada, and it's so sad because she's so talented. I really hope she can make it work, but I fear she'll either have to give up one or the other. Obviously, I hope she goes for the skating! I just don't understand why anyone who's at such an elite level would bother with school, you can always go back to school, but the time frame for being a champion skater is limited. And that's something special that few people can do. I'd say if you have a shot at living your dream, don't let anything get in the way of it. Wondering what could have been for the rest of your life would be so much worse than putting off college for a few years! But anyway, Partick Chan looks amazing this season, as does Takahiko Kozuka, but good grief is Daisuke Takahashi's freeskate music boring this year! I don't know what he's thinking with that, but maybe when he's 'on' it'll be more exciting and make me less sleepy!

And TV-wise, the period drama gods are being very good to us nerds. Lark Rise to Candleford has been so amazing, as usual. I'm going to miss it so much when it's gone!! And I'm quite pleased with what I've seen of Garrow's Law thus far, even though I haven't managed to see one whole episode at a time yet, since my local PBS station keeps airing it on different days and times! It's definitely on the gritty and dirty side of the period drama spectrum, but like Lark Rise, it's smart and good hearted without ever being sappy or foisting easy answers on us, and gives us complicated characters who are good people, but not one-dimensional models of perfection. And I really don't know where the whole forbidden romance plot is going to end up, but I'm definitely along for the ride.

So between good skating AND good shows on TV, I don't know how I'll get any sewing done. But now that I've moved the bookcase in my room (it was by the window getting moldy! ICK!) I feel like I've conquered one hurdle sitting in my way, so I'm energized to haul out my cutting board and lay out that civil war ball dress pattern! And then I won't have to miss the ball next year! :)
