ranting after an absence

I don’t take leftovers to work for lunch, no matter how delicious and salivatary-inducing they are. I want to, but I don’t. I can’t. I won’t. It’s a hard and fast rule I’ve never broken and I never ever will.  And it all stems from the first time I saw a communal work fridge and realised that human beings are just really truly disgusting. I admit I bring leftovers just about every day at work and keep it in the fridge, but ours isn't that bad. Occasionally there will be something old left behind, and when it becomes clear it's not going to be consumed, I've taken it upon myself to toss it out. I have my own microwave in my office, which others use sometimes, but I can tell you that last I've seen, it's generally cleaner than the ones in our kitchen. And hey, can't you just bring your food the old-fashioned way in a lunch box? Surely if my 5 year olds can do it at school, then so can you!

I can bring it in a lunch box, but then what? I can't leave it out in the heat - it would have to be stored in the fridge.. and if it went in the fridge I could never get it out of there again because it would be tainted by THE HORROR.

And don't go overestimating me like that Angela :P There's plenty of things a five year old can capably do that I can't.

Oh Jen, I'm going to assume that Australians just aren't familiar with the idea of using coolers, because I know you're smarter than that :p If you pack your lunch in a lunch box or cooler, you just add a small ice pack to keep it cold. No fridge required :p

My kids use these for school- no Tupperware required, and it fits nicely into their thermal totes with an ice pack layered in between.

Wow thermal totes! Again, you flatteringly overestimate the functionality of my cranium :P That seems like a lot of work - buying a cooler thingo, putting it in the freezer, remembering to get it out of the freezer and then put it in the lunch box WITH the lunch.. that would take literally hours of forethought and lunch thinkingness :P

You don't need to put the cooler in the freezer. Just add an ice pack. I think it's much simpler than having to be bothered to go out to eat all the time.
