Andrew is in singing Jubilee her bedtime lullaby and I am happy that the holidays are well, good and over. We had a nice quiet NYE in, four friends came over to eat delicious food and drink good cider, wine, sipping chocolate and the like and play board games. I like using NYE to mark time better than Christmas or any of the religious holidays because the activity and cast of characters tends to change more from year to year. I'm always doing something with our family on Christmas - New Year's is anyone's bet. Last year we were in playing games too - but with a different set of neighbors and a much smaller baby. The year before we went out to a friend's party, the year before that it was a church party with a totally different set of folks and so on. Never really quite the same thing. Last night was nice, though, and had me thinking that I wouldn't mind if last year was the beginning of the "stay in, drink expensive alcohol, play board games while the kids sleep" era.
Today we took a day trip to the peninsula to see Andrew's folks, let Jubilee play with her cousin Taya and just generally soak up the sunshine and my mother-in-law's always expansive hospitality.
But I'm glad it's all over. My kid needs routine, and ever since becoming the person tasked with providing it for her I've realized that I do, too. Three weeks of visitors, late bedtimes, naps in strange places and sugar all over the place have left Jubilee off kilter and crabby. Which doesn't affect her sunny disposition but does mean that she has a tough time going to bed and is more likely to accidentally bite someone while trying to kiss them. We're working on the whole closed mouth kissing thing but apparently it takes focus.
There are two organic candy canes on the counter that represent all that is left of our holiday sugar stash. They'll be gone before morning and then the Year of the Plan will have well and truly begun.
