I am having a very negative day. i couldnt sleep because of a migraine, and then i woke up this morning and couldnt sleep because that same migraine hadn't gone away. grr. so i need to post about something positive to help me cheer up. i'm going to post the winners of my "people who inspire me for really stupid reasons" awards!

Age: Nothin But a Number Award - Gwen Stefani
If i can really look like that in 12 years and after two kids, i'm okay with getting older. plus she dyed her hair pink when she was 31...and people say im too old for that stuff! ha!

Grad School Trumps Unrelated Creative Career Success Award - Dexter Holland
He didn't get his first major-label signing until he was 31, despite starting the band that would become The Offspring when he was in college. one can assume this is partly due to his attending grad school, which of course is a very appropriate reason to delay career success in my eyes.

Successful Tragic Heroine Award - Sylvia Plath
Although she had early success in journalism and published poetry during her 20s, she didn't publish The Bell Jar til she was 30, and supposedly wrote most of it in the months surrounding her 30th birthday. and no one really liked it, and she committed suicide a month later (unrelated to the poor critical reception). and yet it is MY favorite book of all-time, and she led, despite her depression, such an inspiring life.

Money Ain't a Thang Award - J.K. Rowling
She didn't make money from the Harry Potter books until she was 32. 32 is the same age iii will really start making money from my hard work (assuming i spend the first year deep in student loan debt)! at 28 she was, in her own words, a failure. I certainly don't consider someone halfway through pharmacy school a failure, so, whew. this also means there is still time for me to publish a series of novels and become richer than the Queen :)

Late-Bloomer Fanboy Magnet Award - George Lucas
he was 33 when Star Wars came out! now he owns A RANCH with a manmade body of water named EWOK LAKE and can walk into any sci-fi or fantasy convention for free.

also by chance, or subconscious inclusion due to me being a child of divorce, all of these people have had failed marriages, some numerous, with the exception of Holland & Stefani, who to my knowledge are still married after 16 years and 9 years respectively. those two are also the only ones on this list to have married at my current age or older. so hopefully that success and wisdom of marrying later in life will extend to me.

stay tuned in ten years for my list of people who did things when they were 40 or older!

lists, getting older, the big 3-0
