CakesAs much as I love how my first ever pillow cake came out, the thing I'd really like to cherish forever about this cake is that Kaylee helped bake it. She put her little hand on the mixer with me to blend the ingredients for this from-scratch peppermint flavored white cake. She also ate most of the shards of the crown after the extraction hit critical failure.
The funny thing is, this is just a practice cake. In about two weeks I have quite a lofty challenge in mind.
Lessons learned here:
- When all the pros recommend a frozenish cake for carving, do it. It works well!
- White cakes blow. At least make french vanilla or angel food.
- Make the crown base 3 layers, then add embellishments.
- Take the time to paint right. Slapdash won't cut it.
- Dark colors stand out better, no matter the theme.
