chocolate car cake
Originally uploaded by newfernSo I was practicing for this baby shower thing in a couple of weeks. The theme is cars, so I figure, heck, let's have a car cake. It can't be too hard. And as it turns out, it's not, as long as you don't expect perfection.

This is just a draft, not a final presentation piece. What I Learned (the most important part of doing any practice piece):

* Let the crumb coat dry!
* Smooth top layers Before they dry. At all.
* White icing allows for more color differentiation, duh.
* The more you carve the cake, the less nervous you have to be about the final shape.
* The medium of cake & icing is very forgiving. Lop off a piece? Fill it with frosting. No one will mind ;)
* Don't make drafts from your favorite flavor.
* Have a "draft disposal" plan in advance.
* If at all possible, buy a food grade airbrush!
