Bio-Gardener, aka Jeremy, came out and set us up to get started. Juan and I got straight to work pulling out sod. B had no interest in helping, until he bust a gut watching me swing a pick axe.
The hole digging went mostly to Juan and B, at least for the big trees, the oaks. After that is pretty much a haze of pain and sunburn. Jeremy laughed. It turns out that we have "the worst soil ever." Honest. Flip through some of the pictures to see the dull gray clay that came out of the holes.
But we perservered and B graciously consented to bring us some fried chicken. My gawd does manual labor make for an appetite from heck. I ate two pieces before stopping to breathe.
And here before you is the final product... err, the semi final product. We are planting the flower bed in the fall, so the roots have time to focus on their growth before having to support sprays of flowers.
For those viewing at home, out in front of this shot we have two oaks. Lined up in the back for their mug shots is (from left to right) a
mountain laurel, an
evergreen sage, an
anacacho orchid tree, and a
possumhaw. Only the mountain laurel is slow growing, so we should be annoying our neighbors within 2-3 years.
