Summary: Laura and Billy meet a cryptic River Song on Cloud 9.
----------
Laura Roslin paced through the holographic garden of the Cloud 9. The Quorum would be meeting for the first time and her thoughts were consumed with worries about Tom Zarek, the ex-terrorist who sought to become a Sagittaron representative.
Laura sat down and gazed out at the horizon, up at the false sky, and tried not to fall apart.
She didn't break easily, and when a woman approached her bench, Laura smiled at her and let her sit nearby. One of the citizens of the fleet seeking an audience with her, perhaps. She would have to wait until later. The President was taking a five minute break.
But the woman just sat, looking away, and went to open a brown messenger bag slung over her shoulder. The pack was pretty full, and Laura hoped she wasn't a journalist about to take out a recorder and grill her without her staff around.
But she only took out a strange pen, fiddling with the dials - a media player, perhaps - and looking intently at it. Some citizen on her way to the Quorum meeting. Possibly didn't even realize she was sitting next to the President. Some of the time, Laura Roslin couldn't even believe she was the President.
Wearing black jeans and a leather jacket over a dark blouse, the woman also had frizzy hair pulled back in a ponytail. She looked about forty, and she smiled at Laura and after a few moments of silence, finally spoke.
"Lovely day, isn't it?" she said, in an accent similar to Baltar's. She chuckled, and Laura couldn't help but smile. They looked at where the "sky" grew blurry, almost fuzzy, and you could tell where it ended across the glass dome.
"Nothing is ever what it seems," Laura said, and the woman didn't hurry out a pen to quote her. It was such a relief to have a casual conversation.
"My name is River," the woman introduced herself. "Dr. River Song."
Laura's interest was piqued at this. The Fleet had few trained medical professionals left. It was a shot in the dark, but...
"A physician or surgeon?" Laura asked, keeping her question light. Pleasant. She crossed her fingers.
"Archaeologist," Dr. Song replied. "Although my expertise spans a breadth of fields. But I'm sorry, Madam President. Not a physician. Although I'd love to help any way I can."
Laura shook her head, her smile dimming slightly. River grinned. "You almost hoped I didn't know who you were, didn't you?"
Laura shrugged. "It was so nice to talk about the weather for once."
River laughed. "Everyone needs a break from it all."
Laura nodded in agreement.
"Say you could take a vacation." Laura gave her an incredulous look. This was verging on inappropriate. Did she not realize that it was still too soon? But the stranger amended her statement.
"Say you could stay here, on Cloud 9, for a few days. What would you do?"
The woman was grinning cheekily at her. "Get your nails done?" she asked. "Get a massage? A long bath, perhaps?"
Laura let herself smile a little at this.
"A massage would be…so nice."
There was something in Dr. Song's eyes, then. Something flirtatious.
"Mmm, I'd bet."
Laura turned the tables. "What brings you to Cloud 9, Doctor? Did you plan on taking a few days yourself?"
River's smile faded. "I came a very long way, and found myself…" She seemed to struggle for an answer, and this didn't seem to Laura like the sort of woman who stumbled over her words. "...Sidetracked," she said, a peculiar look on her face.
Laura nodded sympathetically. 'Sidetracked' was vastly understating what had happened to all of them.
"This is a turbulent time, isn't it?" the doctor asked. Again, Roslin could only nod. Anything she said about the Quorum would have to wait for the public to hear, and she saw Billy approaching from across the garden.
The doctor saw Billy approach, and a pained look crossed her face, but then she smiled at him, stood and stuck out her hand.
"Hello, I'm Dr. River Song."
Billy awkwardly took her hand. This was unusual, but if she was a doctor, surely Laura had a good reason to be talking to her.
"You are so young," River said, a strange look passing across her face again.
Billy looked at Laura, then back at the doctor.
"Um…"
"He's the best and brightest member of my staff," Laura interjected. Billy blushed subtly.
River looked a bit sad, almost mournful, looking at the boy, and the two wondered why. The woman suddenly turned and grabbed her messenger bag.
"It was a privilege and an honor, Madam President," River said, "And you, Mr. Keikeya."
She turned again to Laura and her smile returned. "By the way, I know something about hope, about the resistance, about your journey, Laura, and all I can say is that you will find what you're looking for." She looked at Billy. "What you're all looking for. It's out there, waiting."
Laura frowned. Suddenly this encounter had become very strange. The use of her first name made the statement intimate, along with how River was suddenly looking at the two of them so intensely.
"What do you mean, Doctor?" Laura asked.
But the doctor gave a cheeky grin and replied, "Spoilers."
She walked away, and Billy stared after her. Only later did they wonder how she knew his name.
