[Michelle] Bread and salt--and corn! sinanju April 20 2007, 07:09:39 UTC
The impromptu ritual of sharing bread and salt might have helped. But only a little. Lleaseaf seemed ready to leap out of his skin, clearly made terribly anxious by the presence of Akkarin. Alexei looked calmer but Michelle was certain he was tensed to act in lleaseaf's defense.

The tableau reminded Michelle of nothing so much as a meeting between an elder Immortal and a newbie. She'd been there and done that. It was a nerve wracking experience to know that you lived only because that ancient predator chose to let you live, that your continued existence depended on his whim ( ... )

Ami spent a moment torn between staying in the room, rift with a few emotions that buffeted against her shields, or joining Michelle in the kitchen. Quite suddenly she felt protective and the need to shield herself from the emotional tide won out over remaining politely in the room.

With the bread and salt ritual out of the way, Ami leaned over and gave Victor a soft kiss on the cheek. Her lips lingered against his skin a moment longer than necessary as she inhaled the scent of him.

"I'm going to lend Michelle a hand," Ami explained. With a polite smile and nod, she followed the other woman into the kitchen.

Kayla frowned at Akkarin's words and pondered over them silently. She just didn't understand it: in a world devoid of life, why would he want to wander off alone?

"Move on?" Kayla asked the man, "Move on to where? Or what? Most of us traveled for weeks before finding Haven and other people. This is pretty much the end of the line."

“And to what purpose?” Alexei shook his head and crossed his arms over his chest. “The last mage I knew who focused on gathering power destroyed the world.” Power without intent was worthless. All that led to was magic consuming the soul.

Oh, but that wasn’t the end of Nyx’s story, was it? The end of the world was merely the beginning. Alexei sighed. “Then he came back to try it all over again.” And damn near succeeded. Thinking of Nyx as the bad guy left a bitter taste in Alexei’s mouth. Had Nyx always been psychotic or had the power made him that way? He certainly didn’t seem psychotic in Shroud City, but that had been a ruse, hadn’t it? A demon of darkness painted as an angel of light. Wretched.

How many stains could be cleaned from a soul? It felt like none.

[OOC: Metaldog is away for a few days, I'll play Llaeseaf if needed.]

"Why don't we all sit down," Victor suggested abruptly. "No need to continue standing around." He closed the cover over the keys of the piano and sat down on the bench with his back to the instrument. As the others shuffled around and found places to sit, he studied Alexei and Lleaseaf ( ... )

Aleila quickly did as asked, it seemed Victor was the... Leader-person around here. Wich seemed pretty strange with him being not too much older than her and all, but than again, who could tell in this strange new world. Nothing seemed to be quite as it seemed, even to her empathy. On some level, that desturbed her. On another, it scared her and on another level entirely, it amazed and fascinated her.

She ended up sitting on the far end of a couch, huddled up and hoping noone would notice her, let be thought of touching her.

She didn´t mind all that much that the two woman left; the less people around, the better right?
Once more, she let her eyes travel over the occupants of the room as they, too, sought out a place.

Akkarin regarded Victor thoughtfully. The young man demonstrated remarkable insight.

"Thank you, Victor," he said. He looked to Alexei. "If you were born and trained with a certain level of magical power which you grew used to - reliant on - and then you found yourself without it, wouldn't you wish to regain it? I need do very little. You need not be concerned that I might turn to darker powers to regain my strength. It returns naturally, although slowly. With my full strength I will be much better able to travel in comfort and survive my journey. I have been a captive of those who would seek power for power's sake; I have no desire to be like them.

"And as to where I intend to go..." he looked to Kayla. "If I stay here, I abandon hope of returning to my own world. Although I died there, I am alive now, and on my world the woman I love still lives. I do not wish to stop searching for a way to return there."

The words of the man made her think. What did she plan on doing? Was she going to go on? But to what purpose? He might have these extraordanary powers to return to his loved ones... She didn't. The only thing she could do was wander around aimlessly in search of other people, in search of Damien and Lan... But if she stayed, did that mean she gave up hope? Not nescesarily, right? It just ment that she faced the truth... She wasn't strong anough to find them by long shot. She was useless like that... And what if Damien was also looking for her? Than it would be easier to reach her if she stayed in one place, right? Damien could teleport, he could go where ever he wanted. He wasn't useless like she was ( ... )

“Is there any reason to assume the best?” Alexei settled on the floor beside Llaeseaf’s legs. “Magic users are unpredictable by nature. You don’t have to see a weapon in order for them to be deadly. Akkarin, Llaeseaf and myself should all be looked upon with a wary eye until our intentions are clear.” He ran his hands through his hair and sighed. “It’s a matter of safety for the people of Haven. Maybe Akkarin wants to be stronger for love and honor. Maybe Llaeseaf wants to secure his freedom. Maybe I just want to make sure people stop dying.” And pay some penitence for the sins of the past. He pointed toward a street facing window. “But what about the next guy? Maybe he likes the taste of our flesh or wants to see us all enslaved.”

“Frankly, we don’t know. We don’t really know.” Damn life was easier when he could just call them idiots, now he had to explain shit. He pointed toward himself, “Or maybe I’m just telling you that to gain acceptance and work some nefarious plan from the inside. I expect and want all of Haven to doubt me ( ... )

"And not everything or everyone is a situation just waiting to bite you on the ass," Kayla said quietly. "You can't judge a book by it's cover, when you make assumptions you make an of you and me, and I can list a whole lot more that have the same gist ( ... )

"Caution is called for, of course," Akkarin conceded. "But you have made no aggressive move toward me, so I will continue to act on the assumption that you do not wish me any harm, and I hope you will believe that I wish you no harm for long enough for my intentions to be accepted as fact." It sounded pompous, he thought, but his facility in this language was still not the best and he opted for clarity over unfamiliar idiom ( ... )

“I’ll be holding you to your word, Akkarin.” If Akkarin was being honest, he might be a valuable addition to Haven. Alexei couldn’t be everywhere. Only time would prove Akkarin’s honesty. Between Akkarin, Llaeseaf, Alexei and the other able-bodied people, Haven should be able to tolerate just about any threat ( ... )

Akkarin couldn't conceal a look of surprise as Llaeseaf disappeared, leaving behind a puff of smoke which dissipated rapidly.

I wonder... is that something innate to whatever Llaeseaf is, or is it something a magician could learn? Any magician in the guild could levitate, but true flight or teleportation had always been mere suggestions which nobody had ever managed to act upon, and so magic had never had a great deal of use in transportation other than making it safer and more comfortable ( ... )

"Non of you have any hostile intentions, so please stop fighting..." The sentence sounded small and pleading, but steady.

Aleila didn't know what suprised her more; the fact that she'd spoken up or how steady her voice had sounded. She hadn't ment to speak up, the words seemed to have slipped past her mouth-brain barrier without her having any say in the matter.

She once more fought the urge to run and hide, only ducking a little deeper into her chair. The constant tention in the room was starting to seriously wear on her defences and the memories of weeks without anyone around her seemed more and more appealing. She was used to a lot, her family far from perfect, but it seemed that her defences had ran thin over the last weeks... Or had it been longer? Had she become weak and dependant on the protection of Damiens shields?

Marie smiled at the scared girl, trying to soothe her. Alexei was a fighter, so it made sense that he'd take any mage as hostile, especially one as powerful as Akkarin. Heck, Llaeseaf avoided her, and her 'gift' was minor in particular. "It'll be okay."
