The Meet n' Greet

Nov 15, 2006 21:47

Who: Kayla, Xander, Jason
Where: Haven, IL
When: June 15, late afternoon
Invited: Anyone in Haven
Status: Complete

Though the drive to Haven was an easy one, and a pleasant one, thanks to the company, Kayla was more than happy to pass a sign that read Welcome to Haven , Illinois - A Touch of City in the Country. She giggled when Xander snapped off a salute to the sign and then proceeded to clap his hands.

"Excited?" Kayla gave him a quick glance from the driver's seat. In the end, they'd chosen to drive her and Jonas's Hummer. It was the largest and most comfortable of the available vehicles and allowed more space for hauling gear and equipment. They would need it if the list of "trade-able" items that Henry gave them was even going to be half filled.

"Oh yeah," Xander answered. "People, people, people!"

Kayla leveled a mock scowl in his direction, "And what are we? Chopped liver?"

"Yes, but you're the nicest chopped liver that I've ever had the pleasure of hanging out with." Xander scratched the back of his head. "But come on, you gotta admit, aren't you happy that we're not the only nine or whatever people left alive? I mean if there are people here in Haven, that gives me hope that there are people in other places.

"We're rebuilding the world one hick town at a time."

"I grew up in a town like this, so don't knock it," Kayla said. "Small, quiet, removed but still able to reach civilization. It was nice." Her scolding was gentle. Kayla had to admit, she shared Xander's enthusiasm. Not only was this town filled - relatively speaking - with people, but it also still had electricity, a hospital and most importantly, other women. Though she'd quickly put aside her distrust of the men in Spencer, Kayla would still be more comfortable if there were other females around.

There was only so much testosterone a girl could handle.

Xander directed her through the quaint small town streets, following the directions that their hostess had given them. True to Ami's words, the house was hard to miss. Nestled at the end of a cul-de-sac, it was one of those out-of-a-dream Queen Anne Victorians that Kayla had always dreamed of living in.

"Wow," Xander let out a low whistle. "Once upon a time I wouldn't have even known people who could afford to live in a house like this."

His words were an eerie reminder of days long gone. A moment of silence hung in the Hummer after Xander spoke until Kayla shook it off.

She threw a smile back at Jason and shared one with Xander too. Teasingly, she remarked, "Okay, gentlemen. Best behavior. Let's not offend our hosts."

"Yes ma'am," Xander snapped off a salute and with a laugh, they all exited the vehicle.
