Henry was out at the Sheriff's Station finding out just how close Noah had come to becoming dead, Jason and Xander had both gone in search of him- Jason just found him, Xander hadn't yet, Brian was in the shower, and Noah was at loose ends. It wasn't likely that that was going to last long. How long could Brian stay in the shower? And, Henry would be back within half an hour, if he remembered (or Xander showed up to remind him). Still the time, short as it was, felt like it stretched out endlessly in front of him- probably because every time Noah closed his eyes or let Henry's thoughts come to the front of his mind he was seeing his own body prone on the dirt, the big beetle attached to his shoulder as he convulsed wildly. Noah went into Henry's room and closed the door so he could use the full-length mirror on its back and unbuttoned his shirt. He pulled it down off his shoulder and turned around so he could inspect the scar on the back of his shoulder.
It looked no better than it had the day before. The scar ran in a slanted line down his shoulder blade. That was the scar from the ax and it had been too far along in healing for Henry to stitch it up by the time Noah had gotten to Spencer, so it was puckered, irregular and still red, though it didn't really hurt often anymore. There were also two smaller, circular scars on each side from where the beetle had sunk teeth or suckers or what ever they were into Noah. Those scars were very different. They were about the size of quarters and just as shiny. They were hard and smooth and had the same iridescent shimmer that the beetle had had. Henry had stitched the skin closed right after it happened, but three days later, the stitched up skin dried out and cracked off, exposing the hard shiny circles. Henry had tried to remove them but, they were so deep that even with a large amount of whiskey in him, Noah had experienced excruciating pain, so they stopped.
Noah pulled his shirt back on, buttoned up and went downstairs intending to take a short walk- just stretch his legs and breathe some fresh air for a few minutes.
