A guide to Primeval on Livejournal
Primeval is a British TV show that first aired in 2007. It centres around the discovery of “anomalies”, rips in the fabric of time and space, that allow creatures such as dinosaurs from the past, as well as creatures from the future to appear in the present. Naturally this causes all sorts of problems and the show follows a team of scientists and government officials as they attempt to keep the anomalies a secret from the general public, protect the innocent from rampaging dinosaurs and discover exactly why the anomalies are occurring.
In the first series the team is made up of Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall), a Professor in the Department of Evolutionary Biology at the fictional Central Metropolitan University, his lab assistant Stephen Hart (James Murray), one of his students, Connor Temple (Andrew-Lee Potts), a zookeeper they meet at the first anomaly site Abby Maitland (Hannah Spearritt) and Claudia Brown (Lucy Brown) a civil servant employed by the Home Office to debunk the creature sightings. Other important characters include James Lester (Ben Miller) a senior Home Office official tasked with keeping the anomalies out of the public eye, Captain Tom Ryan (Mark Wakeling) in charge of the Special Forces team assigned to the project, and Helen Cutter (Juliet Aubrey), Cutter’s estranged wife who was presumed missing at the beginning of the show but who we quickly learn has more to do with the anomalies than anyone expected.
At the end of series one/beginning of series two the timeline is changed because of something done in the past. This leads to the team now working out of the Anomaly Research Centre (the ARC) headed up by Lester and new team members such as Oliver Leek (Karl Theobald) and Jenny Lewis (Lucy Brown).
More characters were introduced in series three as the team dealt with the fallout of catastrophic events from the first two series and continued to try and work out how the anomalies worked and more importantly, how to stop them. These new characters included Captain Becker (Ben Mansfield) who took over military security for the team, Sarah Page (Laila Rouass) an Egyptologist brought in to trace the myths that can be put down to anomaly incursions and Danny Quinn (Jason Flemyng) an ex-policeman who's still haunted by the loss of his brother through an anomaly years ago.
Primeval was cancelled by ITV on 15 June 2009 but managed to claw its way back in 2011 and series 4 and series 5 continued the adventures of the ARC team, joined by new characters such as Matt Anderson (Ciarán McMenamin), Jess Parker (Ruth Kearney), Emily Merchant (Ruth Bradley) and Philip Burton (Alexander Siddig) as well as some old favourites. There seems little hope of a series 6, especially given that a Canadian spin-off, Primeval: New World, lasted one season before getting cancelled.
For the sake of completion I’m going to list every single Primeval community that exists, but clearly label what each is for and whether or not they are currently active. As of 2011 I shall be noting how many posts an active comm has had in the previous month. Active comms are those that have had at least one post in the previous month. The only exceptions are the newsletter and the seasonal/fic exchange/challenge comms, where naturally posts aren't expected to be made every day.
