HOW TO PRONUNCE WERDS

So I'm at the airport at Charlotte, North Carolina. I see an eatery conspicuously located in the center of the corridor, "Hisshoro's Grill". Cool, they have sushi and Japanese beer. I wonder how expensive everything is, given the grand piano (closed) lying nearby.

"Excuse me, how expensive is a can of your Sapporo?" I pronounce it sahp-poro, which I think is correct. (The menu implies it's sold in can form, but does not list prices.)
"Huh?" The bartender/cashier doesn't understand what I've said.
Another man sitting at the bar says somewhat loudly to her, "Beer."
She responds, "Oh, you mean suh-POUR-oh? It's eight-eighteen."
Grrr. But airports are kind of cool. We get to put trees indoors to make it seem more homely.
