Edward_GWER5718 says:
Thank you for contacting technical support. My name and badge number are Edward_GWER5718. Please hold while I review your issue.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
Hello Daniel.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
Before we start addressing your issues, let me verify first some information in regards with your computer.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
According to your submission and my data, the serial number for your system is [censored] and this is a Gateway 6518GZ(notebook). and also your current email address is [censored], Are these correct?
Daniel says:
I suppose.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
Thank you for verifying your information. I see some opportunity here to enhance your computer experience. Let’s resolve the issue first and then discuss these options.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
I've read your issue description from the submission form. I see that your system cannot load the Windows properly, is this also correct?
Daniel says:
no.
Daniel says:
That's not correct.
Daniel says:
I'm using my Windows partition right now.
Daniel says:
You see, here's my situation...
Daniel says:
I have a 2005 version of Linux installed on another partition in this computer. I'm deleting it, and installing a 2007 version instead. Currently, my computer boots from a dual-boot thing, and i can choose between the two operating systems
Daniel says:
I'm afraid that, once I delete the partition of Linux, that I will need to restore the boot thing to its original form
Daniel says:
I read something about a "fixmbr" command that does that automatically?
Daniel says:
I couldn't figure out how to make a system restore disc or anything; the user manual told me to simply press F11 during system boot... is that correct?
Edward_GWER5718 says:
Yes.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
However Daniel at the bottom you were trying to install the Linux Operating System to your computer using another partition to the computer?
Daniel says:
but when would I press it? during which screen? and will it give me the option to enter the fixmbr command? or will it force me to simply alter my entire Windows partition, losing data?
Daniel says:
I created a partition of approximately 12 GB and installed Linux onto that partition, yes.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
I see.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
Daniel please be reminded that we do only support Operating System that came originally with the computer.
Edward_GWER5718 says:
I apologize I cannot give you such information to resolve your issue or it might broke your computer.
Daniel says:
....
Daniel says:
i have to return
Daniel says:
there is an emergency i must attend to
Daniel says:
you don't understand my issue; when i return, can i speak with someone who does?
Edward_GWER5718 says:
In this case, what I can do for you is that since you were installing another Operating System to the computer and you cannot install the Linux properly, format totally the partition in which you wish to install the Linux for you to completely install it.
Daniel says:
the alternative operating system i am using has absolutely nothing to do with this problem.

Thank you for contacting technical support. My name and badge number are Sid_GWER9500. Please hold while I review your issue.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Hi Daniel.
Daniel says:
Hi Sid_.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
According to your submission and my data, the serial number for your Gateway system is [censored] model 6518GZ notebook, is this correct? And also, your email address is [censored].
Daniel says:
Sure, why not.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Thank you for verifying your information. I see some opportunity here to enhance your computer experience. Let’s resolve the issue first and then discuss these options.
Daniel says:
What can you tell me about the master boot record?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Can you tell me exactly when this started and describe any changes you made around that time?
Daniel says:
When what started?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Please describe any changes you made around the time the issue started.
Daniel says:
um, none?
Daniel says:
What can you tell me about the master boot record?
Daniel says:
You see, I need to restore it to its original form. I think.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You are triyng install a Linux operating system, am I correct?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
trying.
Daniel says:
No. I am trying to restore my master boot record.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?
Daniel says:
None.
Daniel says:
I need to defrag my C drive, but I can't do that until I add 1.70 GB of free space onto it from another partition, but I can't do that until I delete that partition, but I can't do that until I know how to restore the master boot record (in case I need to) after deleting it.
Daniel says:
Do you understand?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Yes. have you tried the Fdisk procedures?
Daniel says:
No; what is that?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
This will completely remove the content of the hard drive and create another partition.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Would you like me to give you the procedures on how to do this?
Daniel says:
I don't want to erase the entire hard drive. No. I want you to answer my very first question. Can you do that?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Okay. With regards to your first question, the solution for this is to perform a full system restore with backup.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
This option moves the C: drive contents to the "C:\My Backup" directory and installs a new copy of Windows. This option preserves your existing data files, however all applications and settings will need to be reinstalled. This option requires a minimum 4 GB of free hard disk space for the new installation of Windows.
Daniel says:
That was not my first question. I am offended that you are not listening to me, and I would like to speak with your supervisor.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Can I give you now the procedures?
Daniel says:
No, you can let me speak with your supervisor.
Daniel says:
I'm waiting.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Please hold.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
I am still researching your issue at this time.
Daniel says:
Okay.
Daniel says:
What are you currently researching?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You will need to check the Boot Priority in BIOS.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You will also need to Reset the BIOS Defaults
Daniel says:
Hm. So what can you tell me about the master boot record?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
It will be fixed by resetting the BIOS defaults.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Would you like me to give you the procedures?
Daniel says:
Cool, thanks. Yes, please.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Okay.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You may follow the instructions below on how to reset the BIOS settings:
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Phoenix - AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility

1. Boot into BIOS
2. Load BIOS Defaults
3. Restart your system or turn it off and turn it back on.
4. Press the Delete key five or six times as it is starting up.
5. With the arrows on your keyboard, arrow over to where it says "Load Optimize Defaults."
Sid_GWER9500 says:
6. The message "Load Optimize Defaults (Y/N)?" should appear. Press Y on your keyboard.
7. Press F10 on the top row of you keyboard.
8. The message "Save to CMOS and Exit Now (Y/N)?" should appear. Press Y on the keyboard.
9. The process will restart your computer.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
This will now resolve your issue.
Daniel says:
Why do you press the delete key five or six times?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
For you to access the BIOS.
Daniel says:
Why the delete key? And why do you not press it only once?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
That is the procedure.
Daniel says:
That doesn't address my question.
Daniel says:
I'm asking why that's the procedure.
Daniel says:
Why five or six instead of once.
Daniel says:
Why the delete key.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
That is the key you will need to access the BIOS.
Daniel says:
Yes, but why is that the chosen key, instead of one of the Function keys?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Just follow the procedures and your issue will be resolved.
Daniel says:
... right. Well, I'm glad it only took 25 minutes to get this far. :/
Daniel says:
You never did describe the master boot record to me, though.
Daniel says:
What is it? Where is it located?
Daniel says:
How does the computer access it?
Daniel says:
Et cetera.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You can access it through the BIOS.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
And by doing the procedures that I have given to you.
Daniel says:
lol!
Daniel says:
Right.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Do you have further questions?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
To save your chat log, please click on the "View Live Log" button at the bottom right side of the chat window. It will open a chat log window. Please use the option to "Save log to disk".
Daniel says:
Well, yes, but you seem incapable of addressing them. You never did let me speak with you supervisor. It seems you have done all you are capable of doing ...
Daniel says:
Right.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
Okay.
Daniel says:
Thanks for your patience. :)
Sid_GWER9500 says:
No problem.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
It was a pleasure working with you. My name and badge number are Sid_GWER9500. Thank you for using Gateway Remote Assistance and have a great day.
Sid_GWER9500 says:
If you don't have any more questions, you can end this chat by clicking on the end session. Thank you and take care Daniel.
Daniel says:
Well
Daniel says:
I have one more question
Daniel says:
What do I do with your badge number?
Daniel says:
Why do you give it to me?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
In case you will need to contact us again, you can look for my badge number.
Daniel says:
How do I look for your badge number?
Daniel says:
I mean
Sid_GWER9500 says:
This is just a part of our name.
Daniel says:
is there some process where I contact you specifically?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You can just contact me though my badge name and number which is Sid_GWER9500.
Daniel says:
How do I contact you through your badge name and number?
Sid_GWER9500 says:
You will just need to chat back.
Daniel says:
I don't understand. Whatever.... see ya.

"The survey for this session has already been completed." is the message I received upon ending the session, but I did no such survey. I wonder if that was what he was 'researching' when I asked to speak to his supervisor... I filled out the survey only for the first one. I told them I was never going to buy a computer from Gateway ever again.
