"Sit."

Makejoy sat.

"Okay, now, down."

Makejoy laid down.

"And... roll over!"

Makejoy stared at him.

"Roll over," he said again, trying to put the treat over her shoulder to make her head follow it. The puppy followed it one way, then turned around to get it the other. Sigh.

"No, Makey, roll overAnd he tried it again, which got the puppy ( Read more... )

Amber strutted in without preamble and plopped on his bed.

"I have had a day let me tell you..."

A beat. A grin. "Hi, Makejoy!"

The puppy gave up on the lesson and pounced on the bed to give Amber her due of affection. Liir watched with a wry smile.

"Lessons will continue tomorrow, I think," he said as he got up and put the liver treats away. He made his way over to the bed and plunked down as well.

"Tell me all about it?"

She totally loved on Makejoy for a good five minutes. Talking to her, petting and scritching, giving kisses. Amber needed to just unwind and not having to say anything to Liir yet, worked well for her.

But after that, she cut her her eyes over at him and said, "Liir? I am not a jealous person."

BLINK.

"Er, no. No, you're not."

She started shaking her head. "...but listening to Dinah today at rehearsal, well, it sort of made me think, you know?"

He had no id---ooooh.

"You're going to quit the play then?" he asked, looking a little sad.

"I'm sorry you didn't get the part you wanted. I guess you can try again during the summer. Or can you?"

Wait. What?

She blinked. "No, geeze, this has nothing to do with parts or who got what or anything. I'm totally cool with my part now." Mostly. "But no, I can't try again during the summer because I won't be here."

Ugh, off track here.

"I'm referring to her tying you up. Totally doesn't sound cool, Liir. Totally."

He was... so lost, he couldn't even find the ground.

"She didn't hurt me," he told her carefully, "I promise. It was just to show me how to get out of the ropes, so they were tied very loosely."

He pulled up his sleeves and showed her his wrists.

"See? No marks. There'd be marks if she'd done it too tightly."

Sighing, Amber did look at his wrists if only to appease him.

"It's not about that, really. I don't want you hurt but you need to understand the impression that it gives to other people. Not that I've ever given a crap what other people think, but you're my boyfriend, so I care."

Yeah, really really lost here.

"What impression does it give to other people? What-- that I get tied up a lot? Well, no, but it has happened and I don't want it to happen again, of course. Hence the lessons. I'm sorry if I've worried anyone. I didn't mean to."

She twisted her lips.

"Liir," she replied patiently. "It's... dirty."

There is absolutely no connection between being tied up and sex, to his mind. The idea is neither interesting to him, nor is it something he'd ever do. In fact, only the most horrible sort of thoughts come from the combination of these two ideas, things he'd heard and glimpsed in Southstairs prison while his 'uncle' had attended 'patients'.

"Dirty as in covered in grime and grease or dirty as in... that's-not-my-broom?"

Amber flushed. "Um. Okay, um, uh, mostly? When people here, hear about people being tied up? It usually involves sex unless you're watching some sort of spy-thriller movie or what have you."

A beat.

"People... said stuff about you and Dinah."

She probably wasn't expecting him to look ill, but he did, closing his eyes like he might lose his lunch.

"Unnamed God," he said with a shake of his head, "how could-- do people really think I'd--"

He looked almost as bad as when he'd been drunk.

"Sweet Lurline, I'd never!"

Ah, god. "I know you wouldn't," she quickly assured him, scooting closer and resting her hand on his thigh. "I just... it didn't sound right and maybe, I don't know, if you still want her to teach you, maybe I could tag along?"

She felt terrible now for saying anything. "Liir? Be okay, okay? I know you wouldn't, all right?"

He nodded. He nodded a lot.

"Certainly! Definitely! F-for goodness sake, I don't want anyone thinking I'd-- Yes. Please. I didn't know."

He swallowed down the bile that was threatening to come up.

"I'd never. I swear to the Unnamed God, to Kumbricia, to all of them I'd never. That's terrible."

...he was thinking something rather more serious than just cheating on Amber, but that was pretty terrible on it's own. He'd never do that EITHER!
