My debate topic today involves Seymour from Final Fantasy X. I’ve come to the conclusion that Seymour wasn’t all that evil at first, or better yet, his dark side was awakened due to Tidus and company. I’m sure this sounds like a huge shock to you all that I am defending Seymour, but when I compare to the other villains of Final Fantasy, he’s some what different. In my eyes, Seymour is some what of an anti-hero in the beginning of the game. Below in the link “My Seymour Theory” I have posted my reasons for my beliefs due to possible spoiler warnings. Enjoy. :)
As you some of you might know, Seymour had a very rough childhood. His father left him, his mother was the only person who cared for him and he didn’t get all the love a child deserves. I believe his mother got sick, so she decided to give up her own life to become the summon Anima. This noble action of Seymour’s mother caused him to feel unbearable pain. So he eventually accepted Anima and went on his journey as a summoner to free the world of it’s suffering.
When Tidus and his crew encountered Seymour for the first time, he became some what of a temporary ally. I mean he was even a member of your team for a brief moment. Then things began to fall apart when Seymour revealed his motives. Seymour’s dream was to wipe out all of mankind because he believed it was the only way to end Spira’s suffering. This is the kind of act from an anti-hero. His intentions are good, but his way of achieving his goals are very outrageous. So Tidus and his friends had no choice but to fight Seymour, but here is where things get deep.

Why did Tidus and his group beat Serymour so bad that they killed him? I think they should have just merely injured him, and then explain to him the error of his ways. Perhaps then he would have realized that his dream could be achieved in a less violent way. I’m almost 100% sure that he would have been refined if they spared his life. Look at Rufus; it took 1 battle with Cloud and the Diamond Weapon assault to knock some sense into him. Same with Seifer, he was refined after 4 battles, and a devastating blow from a Guardian Force. So the reason Seymour became so corrupted is because when a dead person’s spirit is unsent, then they become evil and hate the living. In other words, they become a fiend. Didn’t you notice that Seymour seemed more evil and insane after each time you battled him? Especially the last fight, he wanted to become Sin! I doubt he had that plan when he was alive. To rap it up, I believe if they spared him, then that would have been one less enemy to worry about.
So what do you all think?
