Cloud's Inner Strength

Below is another one of my long yet deep topics I tend to post every now and again. Normally my entries aren’t this long but today I just had lots to talk about. To avoid spoilers I placed the entry behind a lj-cut for those who have yet to see Advent Children, not to mention for its length. lol. To give you a quick idea of what you are about to read, it’s based on Cloud and the Jenova cells.

I know Advent Children is a good movie and all but I feel as though it has so many unanswered questions. I don’t mean to complicate things, but I just love brainstorming new ideas/theories that are within the movie and I’m sure you’ll find this entry to be very interesting.

With all that said…enjoy! :D

Ok so this debate topic is based on a HUGE contradiction within Advent Children regarding Aerith’s Healing Rain, better known as the Great Gospel. Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t the rain remove ALL Jenova cells from the human body? This is where my theory comes in. This may sound quite odd to many, but I consider Cloud to be 100% human after being cured of his Geostigma. Some fans think that the Jenova cells that are in Advent Children are different from those in the game. This is *not* true.

Jenova cells have many effects on the human body and the effects are determined by how the cells are originally introduced to the body. For example, some people wonder why there is a gap between Cloud and Sephiroth’s power. Anybody can easily say it’s because Sephiroth trained allot more then Cloud did, but one would be surprised to realize that it isn’t the main reason. Cloud was exposed to Jenova cells during his teenage years. Hojo injected the cells throughout his veins causing Cloud to become stronger. Cloud’s body can’t really put up a good fight against the alien matter because it’s to strong, and it’s already taking over. In a sense, his body doesn’t get fatigue because the body isn’t even trying to fight the cells because it’s too late. All he can do is basically wait out the discomfort.

But Sephiroth was exposed to the cells when he was a fetus inside his mother’s womb. So he grew up with the cells within him since day one, so it’s only natural that Sephiroth would have a great level in power.

Now as for how Geostigma is caused, I’ll do my very best to explain it. Keep in mind that part of this theory is fact and the other half is merely my opinion. After Jenova and Sephiroth are defeated, multiple Jenova cells are absorbed within the Lifestream. When the Lifestream makes contact with a person, they are exposed to the cells. Here is where my opinion kicks in. I tend to think that the Lifestream didn’t place the Jenova cells “within” the body; it most likely smeared them on the skin. As I mentioned before, if Jenova cells start off in the inside, then I think the body can’t really get fatigue because it doesn’t/can’t use any energy to fight against the cells. But in Advent Children, the cells start off on the OUTSIDE of the body, meaning the body has a better chance of keeping those cells from entering. So the body is using all of its strength to keep those cells out, which is where the extreme fatigue of the fatal disease comes from. When the unsuccessful Jevova cells fail to get into the body, they remain on your skin which will then form that hideous bluish/greenish mark. Eventually, your body can’t fight anymore…then the cells just seep right into the body. The Jenova cells might try to make the body stronger (like it does in the game) but your body has no more energy to handle it, causing death. So in my eyes, that’s how Geostigma works.

Now here is where I finally explain my theory of Cloud being human again. Aerith’s Healing Rain attacks and kills all Jenova cells within the body, in my eyes. I mean, how could Cloud still have the cells that were injected into him from the game if the rain removes all of them? To me, it’s a contradiction to say that Geostigma is cured, yet the cells Cloud has from the game remain.

Sephiroth has two important quotes that support my theory of Cloud being human. After he and Cloud are dead even during the middle of the fight, Sephiroth says “Humph…where did you get this strength?” I find this to be a very odd question coming from Sephiroth. IF Cloud still had Jenova cells within him, then it’s only natural that he would become stronger seeing as how it’s been 2 years. But since Sephiroth knows that Cloud was healed from the rain (thus removing the Jenova cells) then it would make a good reason for him to ask such as question.

The final quote from Sephiroth that I find interesting is “So you lost the Geostigma…that’s too bad!” Again, this is another quote I failed to understand at the time. The way he said it, it was supposed to be a burden to Cloud. But it was naturally a good thing the Stigma was cured, but Sephiroth didn’t make it sound like it was. Not saying AC has any mistranslations or anything, but I think Sephiroth was referring to the Jenova cells in that quote. So in a sense, the quote meant “So you gave up your strength…that’s too bad!” Just a hunch. :P

FINAL POINT!

So where is Cloud getting all of this power from if he no longer has Jenova cells? The answer is within. If you haven’t noticed Cloud has this hidden power that he uses when he is either provoked or when he is very determined. Remember his brief fight with Sephiroth after Zack and Tiffa lost? He was a mere grunt in the ShinRa army and when he got provoked, he bested Sephiroth by grabbing onto his blade “that was still inside of Cloud” and threw him over the railing into the Lifestream and this came from his own strength, not from some performance enhancer. And something very similar happened in AC. Cloud was reaching his limits, and Sephiroth began pounding Cloud then stabbing him in the shoulder. Just as Cloud was about to give up all hope Sephiroth opened his big mouth and said a smart remark, reawaking that inner strength within Cloud. I’ll be honest, if Sephiroth didn’t say anything…there is possibility that Cloud could have been in big trouble, but I digress. So this inner strength in FF7…all of them has it, but it’s obvious that Cloud’s is stronger. Tiffa, Barret, Cid, Rufus Shinra, the Turks…they all have their own inner strength in battle.

Oh and let’s not forget the major attitude change at the end of the film. Is it me, or does Cloud seem more human at the end? He’s finally stopped beating himself up and began smiling and I think it’s because he won using his own strength. So yeah…it’s kind of unfair to think of Cloud has helpless without Jenova cells.

I really hope you liked this entry, so sorry it was so long. So with all that said, do you consider Cloud to still have Jenova cells within, or do you think he is 100% human again?
