This subject matter has been meticulously avoided...

But hey- here it is in hopes of having a go.

Sephiroth says that as a boy, he was “Different from the other children.” What other children? As Shin-Ra’s most valuable asset, and the soul variable (at the time) for the Jenova project, what other children was he around? Did they drop him off at ( Read more... )

Not exactly, which I will touch on in a minute. I am a firm believer that Vincent and Lucrecia are Sephiroth’s biological birth parents, Hojo and Lucrecia’s ‘relationship’ developing after his conception. Though I believe that he is, that does not make it so. Vincent being Sephiroth's biological father was the way I perceived it, and it adds an immense amount to the game for me. One of the things I love so profoundly amount Final Fantasy VII is it's gray area of open-endedness. It may be ‘widely accepted’ or considered ‘canon’ that Hojo is Sephiroth’s biological father, but the majority of these opinions have been formed on the basis of material as an after thought. Information has been manipulated and modified in order to fit new needs. For example, the short animated film Last Order directly contradicts, even completely changes, the events of Final Fantasy VII. Or Rufus’ appearance in Advent Children. Is it possible Rufus escaped from the Shin-Ra tower? Sure. However, before Advent Children, it was blatantly clear that he died. The cold, heartless rookie leader of Shin-Ra Electric Power Company ended up proving his honor, strength, and dignity by going down with the ship. That’s what made him such a remarkable character, and that scene so intense and moving. When we were first ridiculous screenshots of the mysterious ‘wheel-chair man’ fans went crazy. We all thought, at some point or another, that it was Sephiroth. This proved to be a huge marketing advantage (or tactic) for Squeenix These changes were made out of convenience, to make things work. To cement my point, I’ll direct you to the inclusion of a grossly ridiculous and unnecessary character in the up coming Dirge of Cerberus, who just so happens to be one of Japan’s biggest pop-stars. Ughhhnnn.

Woah. I have no idea where that was going. Anyway, back on track. I’d be willing to accept (albeit kicking and screaming) that Hojo is Sephiroth’s father, should I feel sufficient proof arise. However, in my opinion, regardless of who the actual father is, Vincent undisputably believes himself to be.

Way off topic, you guys are insane. I am consistently impressed by everyone’s thoughtful, eloquent responses, questions and topics. I’m amazed at the assembling of intellect in this community. Thanks for all the responses.

Actually, I know there are theories floating around the net that say that Sephiroth looks more like Vincent than Hojo.

Yeah, Vincent DOES look more like Sephiroth than Hojo, but then again, Rufus and his father don't look exactly alike, though no one questions his lineage. Anyway, just throwing that out there. XD;

Yes, I haven't seen Last Order yet, but I have heard that the events that took place in Nibelheim are a little different than in the game. But when I thought about it a little more, I sort of assumed that when Cloud was retelling the whole event, his mind was still a little messed up. I think that even after Tifa helped him reassemble his memories in the Lifestream, he still isn't quite "all there", but whatever floats Squeenix's boat. It wouldn't be the first time they pulled something like this.

Oh, you're free to believe what you want. I mean, if it makes the game fun for you then I say go for it. You are right about one thing; there isn't total proof that Hojo is Sephiroth's father, besides Squeenix's word, in which you already made your point. And I agree about Gackt's character in DoC. Not really looking forward to that... but whatever. I'll survive. Heh-heh. ;)
